The resort was beautiful

Maintenance and janitorial staff kept the grounds and facilities immaculate and beautifully maintained like brand new. Clean, abundant, and aesthetically pleasing pools with fountains, sprays, and bars. Spacious and fresh with many palms. The mattress was very firm. I prefer a soft mattress; but didn't inquire at the front desk if there was foam or something available to soften the bed. The pillows were very firm, and they were able to provide a satisfactory feather pillow.

Let me start with the negativity 1st because there are only a few... the 1st thing was that the resort was an hour away, I thought it said 45 minutes, however I could be wrong on that one.. the next thing is that most of the staff members didn't speak good English.. the last thing was the mesquito's, I usually go to Mexico in November, this time I went in September and there were a lot of mesquito's this time of year. Other than that the resort was beautiful and breathtaking.. I will definitely go back even though it was an hour from the airport. The food was amazing. There is even shopping on site so you don't have to leave the resort at all.. the staff was very friendly.. I will be back to this resort.. absolutely loved it.. I highly recommend it.. I've been traveling to Mexico for the past 3years and I've stayed at 5 start resorts and this is right up there and you can't beat their price.. N

Excellent family vacation at Barcelo Maya in Riviera Maya

Excellent family vacation at Barcelo Maya in Riviera Maya. I would highly recommend the Barcelo Maya resort. We stayed at the colonial and it exceeded our expectations. We were centrally located on the property with easy access to the pool and the beach. For a large buffet style restaurant the food was fairly good. The specialty restaurants were much better and enhanced our total experience. The property was extremely clean and well-kept. It's an excellent place for a family vacation.

We have previously stayed at this hotel and it was excellent. We were expecting the same this time but that was not the case. The room have several maintenance issues and changing rooms proved difficult. The hotel tried to fix most of the issues.

The food was really great except for the seafood reservation one. Lots of kids which we expected families but there were a lot of kids. Awesome pools and service. The beach is incredible with palm trees providing shade. Shopping is close as well as fair prices. Wish more hotel staff was first to greet you instead of you having to say hi or good morning but I would return!

Although we had a nice family vacation it was stressful during our arrival. Our trip was booked under one confirmation number, two rooms, including underage children and the hotel issued us our rooms in two different buildings, in two different hotels. The problem was solved and we did get together but after a long process and a lot of complaining. One room had a broken fridge and even after numerous days of requesting someone to come look at it or replace it.

Unwilling To Recognize a Mistake
AMY G.

Hotel is nothing too fancy but is clean and well maintained. The food and drinks were not the best and got really old after an 8 night stay. The views and pools were excellent. Two things that were incredibly frustrating; First, most of the staff were very friendly but we encountered two very rude ones. Prior to leaving for the trip I emailed the resort to see if nice shorts and shirts were okay for men to wear to the specialty restaurants. I received a response that very clearly stated that this was okay. Therefore, we did not pack pants for my husband and 14 year old son. To our surprise we were not granted access to the restaurant for our first reservation. I showed the manager the email and was a complete ass about it. The next morning I went to the front desk and the person there was a total ass about it too and refused to let me speak to the manager. I understand that mistakes are made and there are language barriers but just own up to and there is no need to be so rude to customers. The buffets were not tolerable for this many nights so we had to buy the most ridiculous looking pants. Second and most concerning issue is that everyone in my family has had a severe GI illness either starting while we were still at the resort or within 1 day of returning. I have significant knowledge in food/water borne illness and we took every precaution. We have traveled to other resorts in the area and this has not happened. Totally unacceptable! I would not recommend this resort. Spend the extra money and stay at a dreams resort.

2nd time there (1st in june 2017) I was there with my GF and my parents(1st time) and enjoy the big pool, we eat at different restaurant, as Tokyo, Kyoto, Santa Fe, Capri, we eat 1 time at the Striker and Tropical Buffet. All our breakfast was good. We finished the week at the Brazilian Restaurant at the Palace. All the staff was friendly and try to understand as my parents don't speak english or spanish. The room was clean, the bathroom had some rust in the bath/wall and some black stains. Some day the waitress around the pool didn't walk to ask if we wanted something, they stay near and empty spot and wait and talk to each other. so we had to go at the bar. When i was there in june the resort (outdoor) was cleaner, maybe since the last month, they had bad weather. And big change i saw, was they remove the card for the towel. You go to the towel Bar and ask for towel. It bring the problem that the morning you see a lot of towel everywhere on the ground, in the trees, in the bush.

Lovely couple retreat at a friendly, value for money resort.

A wonderful and fun resort, although be prepared for the massive size of the complex. They have a bus which will can ferry you round but if you're fit and able, I would advise that you walk and take in the wonders of the place in. Of course with the size comes a huge variety of activities, restaurants and entertainment. Pros would be that choice namely some great restaurants-make sure you use your booking quota and sample the French, Italian and fantastic Japanese cuisine (we went to the Japanese twice but you must book via guest services) but the buffet is good with a great choice too. Evening entertainment is fabulous on the whole and the rooms tidy and spacious (thankfully with great air con as it's pretty warm and humid most the time). Cons would be lack of free wifi. There are 2 places with restricted access in the day but signal isn't great. Also if you're after an intimate, quiet resort, this isn't for you.

This was my first time to visit a resort in Mexico and I was very surprised and pleased. We stayed at Barcelo Maya Tropical and had such a wonderful time. The food was good, beautiful beaches with crystal clear water and manicured landscaping with plenty of pools and beach chairs. Also very easy to find shade on the beach with all the palm trees. We ate breakfast and lunch in the Barcelo Colonial and had very pleasant meals with Alfredo Hernandez as our server. Alfredo knew what drinks we had in the morning and was very efficient and pleasant and kept us laughing. Jose Arcos took care of us on Alfredo’s day off. He also delivered exceptional service along with Alejandro Valderrama, Carlos Arguello and Ediberto Martinez. We also met Fernando Mena while playing a game in the lobby waiting for the rain to subside. He was very pleasant with a friendly smile and easy to talk to. The resort was so beautiful I didn’t want to leave!

We have stayed here 5 times and will continue to come back. The staff is amazing, the resort is exceptionally beautiful, well maintained and relaxing. They take of your every need and the food is fantastic. Our waiter, Franciscko Jhavier Caamal Canche, took such good care of us during our stay. He does an exceptional job making sure you have everything you want or need. I have recommended this resort to several people and all have experienced the same as I have.

Great trip to Barcelo Maya Colonial

I went on a girls trip to Barceló Maya Grand resort in late September through Delta Vacations and we ended up in the Barceló Maya Tropical hotel. This was our second trip to this resort. We all felt completely safe the entire time we were there. Every employee was friendly and served us with a smile. The resort is made up of four separate hotels (Barceló Maya Tropical, Barceló Maya Colonial, Barceló Maya Caribe, and Barceló Maya Beach). They basically all share the same amenities - though there are multiple pools, restaurants, etc. Barceló Maya Palace is on the same property, too, but is a higher end hotel and has their own facilities. The resort is a ways from the airport, so be prepared for the hour long commute. As a reminder - do not stop in the airport if you have a shuttle - go all the way out the doors into the open air before looking for the shuttle company. We had a great time despite a couple of rainy days. We brought Mexican Train dominoes and played them in the lobby while it was raining. The bar near the lobby serves good drinks and has light snacks. While we were playing, the customer relations manager, Fernando Mena, came by just to chat. He was exceptionally warm and friendly and made our rainy day more pleasant with his fun conversation. Booking with Delta Vacations did entitle us to dine in the restaurants every night instead of just a few - that is a big bonus. We picked a different restaurant every night. All were good - La Trattoria and Kyoto our favorites, Capri and Tokyo good, too. Sante Fe wasn't anyone's favorite. For breakfast and lunch we ate in the buffet. We tipped modestly ($3 at breakfast and $4 at lunch for our table of 4) and had the servers pleading with us to sit in their sections! Jose Alfredo Hernandez was just great and provided exceptional service! Jose Argos took wonderful care of us on Alfredo's day off. They were both friendly and fun and remembered our drink preferences (and brought us new shots to try everyday)! We did have an issue with our room assignments. It took a lot of time to actually get our rooms (seemed like more room were needing maintenance than were free to assign). We finally got room keys late in the evening after arriving before noon. Not sure what the "Delta express check in" was supposed to be, but it was anything but express. However, all the employees were pleasant, so it was just an annoyance. Overall, we had a great time and are already talking about going back next year!
