Phish Concert Paradise

I have been to many all inclusive resorts in my life and this one was very much above par. Huge resort with multiple buildings and multiple dining options. Was here for 4 nights for the Phish shows and the staff treated the 8000 or so fans like 5 star guests. I highly recommend this resort

Beautiful beach and pools, but not the best AI around

My husband and I attended a series of weekend concerts on the grounds of the Barcelo Maya and stayed at the resort for convenience (other resorts were offered as part of the concert package). Let me start by saying this resort is huge! The largest I've stayed at by far. This is good for pool and beach and dining options, but, be prepared to walk a lot. Pros: - Pool and Beach are gorgeous and chairs plentiful. Awsesome hammocks all over for lounging were great as well. - Looked great for kids, I saw a few small waterparks, probably best for young children - Drinks were good and well made Cons: - For me the food was pretty bad. I had a difficult time finding anything that looked appealing at the buffet. We ate at the Italian restaurant, Capri, it was ok. The Mexican restaurant, Lindo, was pretty good. I got the chicken mole and found it tasty, but parts of it were cold - like they made it in advance and didn't re-heat it all the way. The Japanese hibachi was the best, very flavorful and comparable to what you would find in the States. Although they didn't do the sake or vegetable catches that make hibachi fun. - Rooms were just ok. We didn't get ocean view or anything, but glad we didn't because there wasn't much directly on the ocean. - No hot tubs anywhere. There are some spa areas as part of the pool that were only slightly warmer. At night it got a little cool and most of our days were overcast and windy, so a hot tub would have been nice to use. - Lack of food availability at all hours. We were looking to eat something after the concerts, but had a difficult time finding anything open. I believe the bowling alley, Strikers, had some snacks, but it was so far away we didn't go. Our room was not restocked after the first day either (nuts and potato chips). We didn't really partake in any activities since we went to the concert 3 out of the 4 nights we stayed. It is probably good for people to know in advance that there are concertgoers staying here (I think Barcelo hosts several festivals which is becoming a very popular thing to do). Although all music ends by around 11:30pm and is on the far end of the property, some fans are very noisy until the wee hours. If you have kids you may want to check to see if the resort is hosting a festival when you plan on vacationing. We overheard a mom complaining that the music people were ruining her daughter's wedding. Overall, I think for a Mexican All Inclusive, this place is pretty good. Generally, I haven't experienced really great food at any Mexican AI. If you want a nice beach and pool, this is a great place. If you want good food, I would go to a resort in Aruba or Bahamas which I have found offer much better All-Inclusive food.

Great Resort

We visited this resort from Jan 5 - Jan 10. We were 2 adult couples in need of some "adult" time after the holidays. There were way more pros than cons but I will list them below separately: Pros: Clean (everywhere) Food - buffets had lots of choices and no line ups. Not much seafood. There was shrimp everyday but they were pasty. We made reservations at the Tokyo tapanyaki grill which was outstanding! Chef there Alberto was amazing! Also we are at the steakhouse which was very nice but the steak was a little tough. Rooms - nice and roomy. Maids do a wonderful job cleaning. Ask for 3rd floor to avoid the musty smell. Mini bar stocked daily. Beds were the only disappointment. So hard and the sheets are like plastic. Bring your own pillow!!!! They were so hard we woke up with sore necks everyday. Pool - clean and very big! Not overly crowded, lots of sun chairs and shade if you need it. Lots of hammocks too. Beach - the beach right in front of the Tropical is very rocky but if you walk down to the beach at the Maya Beach resort it's way nicer. Just watch out for the dip when you walk in. Entertainment - this is where they lacked. Although there were shows every night at the theatre I didn't find them very entertaining. Poolside during the day def lacks entertainment. There are no pool games or challenges. Only aerobics. Excursions - we didn't do any but we took a cab into Playa Del Carmen and walked through 5th ave. Can ride was $20 U each way and very well worth it. All in all we had a great time but I would def only return with our kids as I found it more of a family resort.

Having Fun

Beautiful and wonderful all at the same time! Grounds are impeccable and guest are treated like royalty! Special thank you to J. Carlos and Diana at the front desk for taking care of a minor concern immediately! Lots to do in the resort without leaving unless doing an excursion! Will go here again! Be sure to see Jose at the pool bar to get a special and delicious cocktail! Can spend time snorkeling the many coral reefs or just laying on a lounge chair and just relaxing either at the beach or pool side! Sunrises and sunsets are just incredible! With the Belts of Venus making them even more spectacular! Evening theater performances are professional and most enjoyable! So as a family or not...go and enjoy this resort and look up J Carlos at the front desk!
