Fabulous family vacation!

We had such a wonderful time. Loved the outdoor setup of the hotel where instead of being indoors practically the entire hotel is outdoors where you walk from place to place down beautiful hallways with thatched roofs above head & water & fountains on either side. Grounds are enormous! Largest hotel property over ever seen. Over a mile of beach & each area of the beach is totally different. Whether you want to be in deeper water where you can either snorkel or hand feed sea turtles (which was personally my favorite part of the trip), or other parts where you could walk out forever & the water never got deeper that your waist. Great food & super friendly staff. Pools & surrounding areas kept immaculately clean. Loved our week stay & cant wait to come back.

Not the resort for me

There were good points and then there were bad.... First time in a Barcelo property, was there September 2016 Saturday to Wednesday. We went with Club Premium and I'm glad we did if only for the no-wait check-in and check out. Our trip coincided with the Independence Day holiday and we did see very, very long lines checking on Sunday and Monday both at Tropical and Palace. As part Premium, we were given a room upgrade. We were given a suite, instead of the Junior Suite that we booked. The room was very spacious for just the two of us. It had a half bath, dining area, living room area, balcony that is accessible from both the living room area and the bedroom, separate bedroom with its own bathroom with a tub, separate shower, separate toilet, double sinks, huge closet (for vacationers). Suite had 2 flat screen TVs, 2 minibars (fridge in living room and bedroom). We had to call to have them replenished. We had our beach towels in our room – another benefit of Premium. Not sure how or where to get beach towels otherwise. Toiletries are provided in the bathrooms, we even had a candle and bath salts. Shampoo, conditioner, body wash are in a dispenser on the wall. I suggest bringing your own good quality conditioner. You will need it after a day under the sun-beach-ocean-pool. Staying at an All Inclusive and paid for Premium but when I called to request more bottled water, they said the limit was 4. Never got served once when we were in the pool nor the beach areas. We had to get up and get our own drinks from the bar…and there is always a line. Cocktails are the usual weak and very sweet. The entire Barcelo Maya property is huge! Even Tropical itself is huge and too spread out which is part of the problem for me. Our upgraded room is at the farthest end away from the elevator on the 3rd floor. On a positive note, it is near the stairs, pools, theater. Too much walking and stairs to get around – not good for my knee injury. Too many wasted spaces too, imo. Like the pools/fountains could have been swim-outs. Just a thought. I asked if we could switch to a room closer to the elevator even if it's not a suite. I was told none was available. I'm guessing due to the holiday and the convention. Got a call Monday night that there was a room available. We decided not to move as we were about to leave anyway (Wednesday morning). In terms of food, they’re okay at best. We had a chance to have dinner and lunch at the Palace buffet as part of Premium. The buffets were impressive at first, even the buffet at the Tropical and Colonial (right next to each other) but gets old really fast. Our trip coincided with what must have been Samsung Mexico’s 2 day Sales convention so Monday-Tuesday was pretty much Mexican at the buffet for lunch and dinner along with the usual salad bar, soups, pasta station, grill station, dessert buffet. The Mexican dishes were good as well as the different types of fresh salsa and guacamole. Breakfast, lunch and dinner at the buffet were all okay but like I said, got boring fast. Servers were okay, better if they know you are a tipper. Room Service is available with a surcharge but included with Club Premium. The food was good, delivered when promised, hot and fresh but some items ordered might be missing or you might get extra items. For our a la carte specialty restaurant dinners, we chose the seafood restaurant, Japanese, and steakhouse. Booking was fast and easy. Again, thanks to Club Premium. The steakhouse closed on the night we were supposed to go so it’s a bummer that we did not get to try it. We ended up choosing Italian for our last night. Food was good, service was good. However, for an all-inclusive, it is not unlimited. After all, this is still part of the all-inclusive. Of course, the food they serve is enough. It’s the restriction that I don’t like. Anyway, there is the buffet or room service for anyone who is still really hungry after the dinner at the a la carte restaurants. We are spoiled by AM Resort properties where everything is unlimited. Some waiters (at AM Resorts) might discourage you from ordering too much but will oblige. The staff do not always ask about allergies so if you have food allergies, be sure to let them know. The beach area and ocean in front of the Palace is the best among the five ocean fronts. There are rocky parts and there are sandy parts. Sadly, we did not see a turtle up close. Note that there is a sign not to feed the fish/animals but people still bring fruit with them to the ocean to attract sea creatures. Beach chairs and shade were never a problem during our stay. The spa, watersports, dolphinarium, mall are at the other end of the resort (mall is almost central). Better to take the bus to get around especially for those with mobility issues. We did take the bus on many occasions but then again you waste precious vacation time waiting for the bus. Prices at the spa were good, comparable to prices at home. Cheaper than at AM Resort properties. Massage was good. We were not aware that hydrotherapy was included with Premium and only found out on our last day so we were not able to use it. I really do sound like I liked Club Premium, right? Well I did and would recommend it but I feel that for an all-inclusive I shouldn’t have to pay for what I got. Surcharge for room service? C’mon. Or I’m just spoiled by the “unlimited” at AM Resort properties we’ve been to and the size of their properties is just right for us, especially me. We had high expectations as this resort came highly recommended by friends in addition to countless positive reviews. Needless to say, we were disappointed. There was no major catastrophe for us to dislike this place although we are not returning to this resort soon…or ever. I don’t blame the people who love this place. There is so much to enjoy especially families with children. It’s just not for me.

wonderful service

This was a great experience! Everybody was always smiling helpfull and ready to assist, be it in Spanish, English or French. Just to name a Few memorable ones were Romeo Pale Ico, Cornelio Tuz, Tatiana Lovo, Iseli, Antonio at the bar, Andi at the reception, Asuncion that worked at the buffet. I unfortunately do not remember everyone, but they all were helpfull and had a great smile. They showed true mexican hospitality.

Could be friendlier to their animals

I usually stay at the Palace part of the resort but the Tropical was such a good deal and the only part I missed about the Palace was the Theater and the French Restaurant. Although we only got 4 ala carte meals, overall they were pretty good. We ate at the Mexican, Sea Food, Steak house, and Japanese. The steak house could use better steaks; the Japanese’s surf n turf was exceptional! We spent our day at the beach (chasing the shade from the palms as they do not have palapas). We snorkeled every day (saw turtles everyday (including kids abusing them!) there were no black birds, seagulls, etc. because they have people walking the grounds with Falcons to kill/chase them away !) see photos We will continue to return here (Barcelo Riviera Maya) because next to Akumal, this is our favorite place.

Almost perfect

Beautiful beach and pool! Staff is wonderful. Just got back from a seven day stay. The people that we we were face to face with were very nice. It felt like the management company wanted to crank out money more than make a wonderful vacation spot. I think the infrastructure is not aggressively maintained because something delayed us personally on several days. Little things, for example, the batteries on the door lock wore out and we had to wait 2 hours for maintenance to fix it before accessing our room. No big but preventable. Many people are switched between Colonial and Tropical. It is the same hotel. Both beautiful. The surf machine costs extra but is reasonable and worth it! Jaguars the disco was fun the night we were there. Kyoto is better than Tokyo. Food is good everywhere but better at the specialty restaurants. Spa is beautiful! Even if you don't go premium the hydrotherapy package is something to experience. The maya mall is only a bit more expensive than the Playa del Carmen strip. Got gold Onyx charms for a great price. Beds are good. A special thank you to Thomas for water aerobics, Jose A for outstanding food service and Victoria at the premium desk who was so helpful always. We went with a party of 8, ages tween to middle, and everyone had a great vacation.
