2nd Time at Barcelo Maya Resort
Peggy S, Mission Viejo, CA

This was my second time to the Barcelo. I had initially booked the Colonial, then went on line and discovered it was being renovated. I wished I had known, I would have booked another resort. I was put into the Tropical, which is fine, it's the exact same thing. Except half of the huge pool by the beach was closed. And the restaurants at the Colonial was closed. Probably the one thing I missed the most was the air- conditioned lobby bar at the Colonial. The Tequila lobby bar at the Tropical is not air- conditioned. The rooms are identical for both Tropical and Colonial. However, I have never been to an all-inclusive with so few people. The resort was only 21% full. There were no people anywhere. Granted, it was easy to get into the specialty restaurants, but there might be only 1 or 2 other couples in there. Yes, we could get lounge chairs by the pool. But, with so few people, the shows at night were non-existent, no Karoke, no one to do it. Not many people wanted to play water volleyball or do much for activities. Half way through the week, they started pulling all of the furniture out of the first and second floors of the Tropical. Still don't know why. The Meixcan Lindo Restaurant in the Beach was very good, the Santa Fe steakhouse was so-so and the Tokyo (Bennihanna-wannabe) was very good. THe buffets were the buffets. You can always find something to eat, but it may not be warm. Yes, the drinks are watered down. But I still encountered alot of people who took all- inclusive to mean they had to drink until they were totally obnoxious or throwing up. They were not college kids. Hmmm..... The scuba was ok. Dressels is always a great organization. But, I didn't go here for the scuba, as I was with a non-diving friend. If I want good diving, I go to Cozumel and suffer the even worse food at the Iberostar. I can guarantee to lose weight there in a week. I might go back. But I am thinking maybe I ought to pay a abit more and see if I can avoid the rowdies. Just a thought. More>

Best Vacation Ever

This open layout hotel was just what me and my hubs were looking for!! We enjoyed walking throughout what it seemed like a mini rain forest. We saw lots of iguanas roam freely through the hotel. And I loved the palm trees with coconuts! I saw a crew getting coconuts down from my first floor balcony and I asked if i could have it. They chopped it opened for me and gave it to me! So when you sit out on your balcony/porch all you see is beautiful green native plants/trees/ bushes! We Loved that this Hotel also had its own shopping mall and outside market that was open late. We loved the convenience of shopping while having a Margarita in hand and there is no forceful shop owners that try to get you to buy everything like outside in the bigger cities. The Casino was not open yet but they do have a bowling ally and lots of specialty restaurants. The food was great and it was very family friendly. Though we did not bring our kids, we are planning a trip back with them and will stay here! Did I mention you can swim with the dolphins here too? Yes you can!!! You can even snorkel with your own gear off the huge dock they have. Lots of things to do and such beautiful landscaping =) The only down side was..... the swim up pool bar always had trash. We weren't hanging by them much but if you are that person be warned. Also it took a couple of days for them to refill our mini fridge in the room. More>

Don't Worry, Be happy

This is a resort that if you Just make a decision to be happy and not sweat about the minor issues . you should be able to achieve a good time. This resort has the basics to make you happy in general for a typical Cancun vacation. The beach is beautiful, the ground is and very pretty and very clean. On site snorkeling which is definitely happening in every resort. Not only I saw fishes of many kinds and I also encountered Mr. T (or Ms.T) almost every time I was in the ocean, which is awesome. The fruity drinks are the best including the fancy drinks , juices or the smoothies in the morning, because they use the real tropical fruits, which I love. The buffet food is good maybe on some days not as good as I remembered from last time , but in general you should be able to find something you can enjoy. Some days really good such as grilled lobster all you can eat. The Japanese restaurant is a guaranteed good time, and the new Italian restaurant doesn't have any flavor in my opinion. Loved the Spanish restaurant , the steak house is satisfying too. The new Mayan Mall is beautiful, but It is mismanaged. I don't know what they were thinking charging so much for the games for an all inclusive resort. The service is good for the most part. I have been to other places which people understand English better, but after all we are in a Spanish speaking country. I understand its a little tough to be excited about the buffet after a couple of days, but if lower the expectations a little , you should still find something tasty. Believe me I have been to another big resort that I can't find anything from day one which I will never go back, again. The Caribe and Beach side of the resort look better than Tropical (colonial is closed for renovation) at this moment, but you can go to that side and enjoy everything the other side has to offer for free. It makes no difference to me. Again, it won't be perfect, but generally speaking the negatives are not out of control enough to ruin your vacation. I probably will go back again after they finished all the renovation. More>

Treatment of guests not on par with other resorts
macmedia, Chester, NY

We're currently checked in at this resort and not having a good stay so far overall. We paid extra to stay at a Club Premium room at the Tropical. Upon arrival at 11 am we were told that we could not get a room key until 3pm. While it's a pain, I get it because it's a written policy. However at 4:30pm we're still not been able to check in and they are not accommodating at all (speaking to many front desk personel). The problem is that with a family here, the kids are getting restless sitting in the lobby - the "free" wifi given to Club Premium guests will ONLY allow 1 computer to sign on. It's not reasonable but what gets me is that we're waiting and they won't even provide a temporary sign in for the other family members even though they are mlate in providing a room for us. It's unacceptable. I thought that booking a stay away from Cancun would result in a nicer surroundings and better treatment but that was a bad assumption. I will post photos after returning home - but it's mediocre. It doesn't look luxurious. Nice but not something like Melia properties that we stayed at previously. There is NOTHING surrounding the resort property to walk to. Unlike any Cancun strip resorts that have lots of places to walk to and visit outside, it's barron and devoid of any interesting sights. Waiting around, we went to the buffet and it's pretty good fortunately. We went to the adjoining Caribe buffet restaurant and that is quite a bit nicer than the Tropical or Colonial. I just wanted to vent our frustrations checking in but we will update our stay as the days go by. For now, we regret taking the 1 1/2 hour drive south of Cancun and should have stayed at a resort in the main section where it's more lively. Remember that they are very stringy with their wifi if you need to keep in contact with the outside world. Only 1 device allowed (paid or free) More>

Another Great Experience

Just returned from our second stay, 09/18 thru 09/24, at the Barcelo and the renovations completed since our last stay have only made it better. While we missed the Mediterranean restaurant, the new Asian and Italian restaurants were awesome. The sports bar is a nice addition to relax and watch your favorite sports team. The quality of the service, food, drinks, pools and beach shows the resort takes pride in the happiness of their guests. We look forward to seeing the completion of the next round of renovations when we return in the future. If you like to snorkel, the onsite reef seems to have more activity in April and May than Sept., but we enjoyed ourselves anyway. One last thing, the churros for breakfast were a great way to start the day :-) More>
