we went to Barcelo for new year, & spent a week from end of December 2015 to Jan.6 this year. this is the best resort we've been to in the Mayan Rivera area, the rooms are very comfortable, & the beach was amazing, the food was really really good.. I would go back again if I get a chance More>

Best resort I've ever visited. Their entire staff has been amazing to my family and I. We are completely WOW'd by our experience here and definitely want to come back and make it a yearly tradition. We even made friends with Salvador/Rafael (bartenders) he made a fresh drinks for us and recommended for us to try new drinks that I hope someone can make in the US. Definitely a 5'star experience thanks to Irvin's Cervantes and Susy Yamin More>

Before you think this is just one person swimming in a sea of many fantastic reviews, I'd encourage you to actually read this. This hotel is not cheap. There are others which are quite a bit less money. So if you're willing to pay for this hotel, you expect the best, or at least a level of better everything. We were disappointed. Positive: The resort is HUGE, and incredibly beautiful. The landscaping is gorgeous and it is kept very clean. The beach and all facilities seemed well maintained. The rooms are comfortable and nice, but not amazing. Nice terraces. The pool is enormous and lovely, and the beach is great. I saw several employees doing more than one job (dance leader by the pool, leading bingo and then in the evening show) and that was impressive. They seemed enthusiastic. We saw the Circus show, and it was incredible. The specialty restaurants have better service and better food. Medium: The room was okay. Nothing wrong with it per se, but for the price, I expected more. Service in buffet restaurants and at bars was okay. I would guess that employees get bonuses if you use names on TripAdvisor as they all had pre-printed slips with their names, encouraging you to review, and they give them out when I wouldn't call the service that stellar. Breakfast and lunch buffets were good. Negative: Having to pay for WiFi is absolutely ridiculous. At the rates this hotel is charging, to not include it is robbery. On top of that, you're limited to only connecting one device. So if you want to be able to connect two phones, you have to pay DOUBLE the price for WiFi. That's insane. Who does that anymore??? Dinner buffet is poor. Same food every night, much of it was dry, boring and not flavorful. You have to have reservations for the specialty restaurants. To get them, you can't call, you have to actually GO to guest services. I have better things to do on my vacation than to seek out an office and stand in line to make dinner reservations. Then, you have to do it well in advance, depending on how many people are at the resort. For several nights, there were no restaurants available, even though we tried 24 hours or more in advance. Whatever system is used for reservations isn't working because several times, there were discrepancies in space actually available, times and restaurant hours between the restaurant and guest services. Total waste of time. Then, many employees don't seem to know the rules. One guest service employee told us we needed a card of some sort to make reservations, but no others did. One said that the reservation had to be 24 hours in advance no matter of availability. Another said it depended. It was incredibly frustrating. We tried to order room service knowing that there was a charge of 115 pesos. But, unknown to us our account was closed credit, and so to order, we'd need to go first to reception, open our account with the credit card we used to pay with at check in (again) and then order room service. Hm, if I wanted to leave my room, I wouldn't be ordering room service. And, none of this was explained at check in. You had my card, just use it or let us pay when it is delivered. Check out was a mess. We asked guest services if we could just leave our cards for towels and keys in the room since our account was closed and were told yes, that was fine. So there we are, in our transport van ready to go to the airport when we are stopped and told that we have to be "released" by reception. They wouldn't let us leave! One person said we'd have to go all the way back to our rooms to get keys. After explaining that we don't have them, that they were locked in the rooms, we were told that we'd have to go to reception, get a new key, go the room, get all the keys and cards, go back to reception and check out there to be "released". I refused. Another employee said that since our account was closed, we could just check out at reception. Another said that we needed to go to guest services. Good grief. Train your staff!!!! Finally, we went to reception and had to just get our bracelets cut off. That's it. All that delay so that someone could cut our bracelets and write our names on a slip of paper that said we could leave. Total waste of time. Inefficient and from the dark ages. We say many guests being overserved at the bars. This results in an extreme amount of public drunkenness. Think about that before you take small children. There seems to be no concern for how much people drink with a constant line of shots passed out at the bars, resulting in one young lady vomiting in the pool and passing out several times and slipping under the water. Nothing was done about this. When she walked away from the pool and vomited on the sidewalk and sat down it for 20 minutes, we saw 4 employees walk past her, look at her and keep going. No one sent help, no one cleaned it up, nothing. We finally pointed this out to someone we assumed was a manager and he asked her friends to put her in a lounge chair. Then they handed out more free shots. Very irresponsible. More>

Our family enjoyed a Club Premium Suite facing the ocean in the Yucatan building. Jessica was very attentive to our needs and questions. Always with a smile too! Although there seemed to be a lot of people staying, it never felt crowded. That's a tribute to how they built and run the resort. We need to acknowledge several resort staff members who helped make our stay so memorable: Club Premium Concierge - Jessica Tropical Entertainment Staff - Antonio, Angel and David and Emy Pool Waitress - Clara U Spa - Diana Thank you for all your hard work. We would strongly recommend this resort to friends and family. The grounds are immaculate - the beach has your own palm tree waiting for you... More>
