Please stay away from this resort! I have travelled to Cancun / Riviera Maya many times since i´m mexican. I´ve also been in many different beaches in Mexico and there is waaay too many beautiful and nice resorts to choose from but Barcelo Maya Tropical is definitely not one of those. I travelled with my friends for my best friend´s wedding this october and I was really looking forward to this trip since I was about to sign a contract with them for my own wedding (thank God that never happened). First of all, my friend was getting married at the Barcelo Maya Colonial, and they told her about two weeks before we arrived that they moved us all to the Barcelo Maya Tropical due to renovations in that hotel. When we were on our way to the hotel, some of our friends got there earlier and said they wouldn´t let them into the resort property as they didn´t appear to have a reservation. They had to be escorted to the lobby to find out about 10 minutes later that they indeed had a reservation. When we finally got there and tried to check in, the girl took about half an hour because she said she couldn´t find our reservation even tho I had the confirmation number and everything. Clearly everything got messed up since they moved all the reservations from the wedding from one hotel to another. When she finally found it, she told us we had one bed when we had requested two. So she had us waiting there for another half our, to finally give us a different room with two beds, but told us it was not gonna be ready until half an hour later or so. We went to have some lunch but it was past 3 and the buffet was already closed so we had to grab something from the snack. There were not many options and we ended up with a salad, and left with our close to empty stomachs. When we got to our room we had to call the bell boy so they could bring up our luggage but to our surprise the phone did not work. We tried several times and could not get through. Finally after unplugging and plugging back the phone for a few times we made it work and called the front desk. Asked them to bring up our luggage and send someone to fix the phone. Also our safety box and tv weren´t working either so they had to send someone else for that. We had no beverages on the fridge either. Long story short, had to wait over an hour with a parade of maintenance people to try and fix everything that was wrong in the room. Only fixed the phone and safety box, never brought drinks and also no tv for the whole trip. When we were finally able to leave the room, we went downstairs to grab a drink from the bar at the pool. We were waiting for over 20 minutes with the parents of one of my friends and the guys there never gave us any drinks. We left completely disappointed and walked to the Maya Caribe hotel that served us some drinks. The hotel was not even full, so we were totally expecting a better service everywhere. We were not the only ones complaining about it as other guests from the wedding were also complaining about the lack of food options and the bad service at the bars. The food from the buffet was the same every single day with a very poor quality. We only had one opportunity to dine at the italian restaurant and the food was sooo bad we had to leave even before dessert and ended up at the buffet. We struggled every single time we wanted to order a drink so we basically gave up on that. The fish served at the restaurants had lots of bones. The air conditioning from the restaurants was always leaking which made the floors slippery and dangerous. We were told by the bride that the hotel was recently renovated which clearly was a lie, nothing was working properly there. I could go on and on about so many things that were wrong and not only from a guest point of view but also from a bride´s point of view. A lot of things were poorly planned, clearly mistakes from the wedding planners that the hotel offers. The staff from the buffet and bars were always rude and ignored us every time, they only cared about foreigners, never even brought us water, when others were offered drinks all the time. The last day a couple hours before check out we were walking thru the lobby and since it had rained, the ceiling was leaking, obviously had no idea and there were no signs anywhere saying that the floor was wet. So I slipped and fell. I sprained my ankle pretty bad, luckily one of my friends that travelled with us is a doctor. The staff only brought me some ice after requesting it, and said that if I wanted to see a doctor I had to pay for it, even though it had been their fault for not having signs, having ceilings that leak and not wiping their floors. I am a dancer and I had to stop working for a couple days and had to take pills for the pain obviously after consulting with my physician. I understand accidents happen but this could´ve been prevented by the staff and they obviously didn´t care after it happened. No apologies offered, no assistance, nothing. After this unpleasant experience I returned home and turned down the contract for my wedding. I am getting married to a canadian and given their lack of interest in the mexican market, they did not only lose one customer, but many foreigners that were going to go for my wedding there. I´m obviously never returning to one of their resorts. It´s a nice property but with that awful service and lack of maintenance it´s not worth it. More>

We have been traveling to Mexico for many years. We used to stay in Riu hotels. After stay in Barcello once, we decide to stay only at this place. Main thing what we like it's customer sevice. Amaizing people at front desk. Never have issues. Check in was fast and easy, same as check out. It was a pleasure to meet Salim Tobon at front desk. Very nice, respectfull, responsible and intelligent young men. I wish all hotels will have that kind of people and that great customer sevices. At dining area - the same. People helpful and nice, what ever you ask, they are trying to help immedeately with smile on the face. Garden area and yard very beautiful. You can tell people do real work there to make it looks beautiful. Great restaurants. Big variety of meal in baffet. Clean and spacious rooms. Ocean view rooms big and beautiful. Beautiful pools for kids and for adults. We had amaizing time at this place every year! More>

We have been traveling to Mexico for over 15 years. We stayed here from Oct. 20th to Oct 27th 2015. We went down to go to our nieces wedding. So that are actually the ones that found this great resort for a wedding. When we arrived, we were given a cocktail upon checking. Our room was ready and we got the room we wanted. There was a bottle of Champagne in our room and we weren't even the newlyweds. There were ments on our pillows. The rooms were clean and the grounds were very well kept. They give you 4 reservations to use in the many restaurants they have. Every meal exceeded our expectations. They have a dress code in these restaurants and they could inforce it a little better because I did see a few tee shirts worn by the men. We were able to snorkel right off the beach and I saw as many fish there as I did when I went SCUBA dicing. Most people complain about the buffet in these resorts, but I can tell you from past experiences that this resort had the best buffet I can ever remember having in Mexico. The swimming pools and swim up bars were great and they were quick to wait on you. The entire staff at this resort was very helpful and easy to talk to even with my limited Spanish. We have never stayed at the same resort in all the years we have been going to Mexico, because we like new things and new adventures. This is the first resort that I can honestly say we will return to Barcello Tropical in the future. We have paid a lot more for resorts that didn't have half the aminieties that this one does. This resort treated us like the resorts in Mexico used to treat us and we loved it. More>

Loved it but...

I thought that the resort was very beautiful! I even had a lovely gecko friend visit me in my room. It was a little on the cool side while we were there but that didn't stop my from sitting poolside with a drink in my hand! The food was great but it was very repetitive and I found myself getting tired of the food fast. All the bar and food staff were wonderful and friendly but the front desk staff were a little rude. I would probably stay in this resort again. More>
