My 1st trip to this resort, with just me and my 16 year old daughter for a spring break vacation end of March. The other reviews describe the place accurately. Here is a recap of my experience at the Barcelo Beach resort. We arrived on a Wed at about 3pm and there was no wait at the check in desk so we walked right up. The front desk was not welcoming, friendly and did not explain anything to us. We did not get the 2 towel cards we should have to get towels at the pool. We did not get the coupons that were to come with our package. We had no clue so we walked off to discover for ourselves later and have to stop back at the desk. We immediately went to make our dinner reservations. (do this right away!) We found 7:00, 7:30 an ideal time for dinner, which allowed us to stay at the beach and pool until 5 and then get ready. We like the Japanese Hibachi best in the Colonial building, had not realized there are two. Kyoto is in Colonial. Tokoyo is in the new mall. We liked Kyoto so much we went back and made a reservation for the Tokoyo, at the end we decided we liked the Colonial building Kyoto better! We also went to the Italian place in the new mall, it was pretty good! I believe there are 2 Italian restaurants too. Don't get mixed up as to which one your reservation is at, and bring the white ticket with you that they give you for your reservations! Lesson learned there... My daughter had the spaghetti carbonara at the Italian place in the Maya Mall and really enjoyed that. I had a flatbread pizza which was also pretty good. We were allowed 4 restaurants so the last we tried was the Mexico Lindo. That was our least favorite, we did not care for the appetizers much but the fajiatas were pretty good.
As others also stated the grounds were very well taken care of, overall the staff were pleasant and friendly. I brought $100 in cash, 5s and 1s to tip the bartenders and bell men and maid staff. I discovered there are 2 people that come into your room, it is not just the maids that clean. The pop/water/snack people have a seperate cart they go around with. So I left $5 a day for the maid, but am not sure if the snack person or the actual maid cleaning got the tip! I would bring more 1s and less 5s next time.
I would upgrade to a premium next time, as the drinks were not up to my standards. It was clear to me that the liquor bottles are watered down, the drinks were not made well. I am fairly certain the SKY vodka they poured me was not really that and was very weak even if you ask them to make it a double pour. SO the drinks, very disappointing the 1st few days until I figured out what I liked. The swim up bartenders were friendly and nice, mostly. Ask for a mudslide, those are pretty yummy frozen style drink! Like an adult chocloate milkshake! I got to the point where I asked for premium on the rocks, like Drambuie or Frangelico etc. SOmething they could not make watery, weak and pointless..the wine, oh boy..Terrible! I am not a wine snob, I can handle an average house chardonnay etc. I would not even drink their wine at all. I really missed a good glass of wine while there! I did buy for about $14 usd at the restaurant a half bottle of OK chardonnay for the dinners we had. If you want to buy a bottle for the room, Get it at the airport when you land! Get a few, whatever you like to have in your room. But don't get it there at the resort, stop at the store in the airport when you land. I picked up a bottle of Stoli Vodka for the room and it was just $16 usd. I wish I had got a few bottles of wine too! While all inclusive, this resort does not make the best drinks and sometimes at 10:30 when you want to hang out in the room or on the balcony it is nice to have a drink. Watching TV: only about 4 channels you can find that have English. I watched alot of A&E. with spanish commericials and subtitles. No big deal, but just know not much to choose from!
Wifi: again, front desk mentioned nothing and offered nothing. I think I would have paid the fee. But tried to use the wifi from 10 to noon in the Maya Mall. Not much success connecting there. Frustrating. But I am OK with disconnecting. I called AT&T before I left to see about an international plan for a temporary/month. You can pay $30 or $60 to add a plan that allows free texting and wifi thru them. Also a spotty and difficult thing to connect and use, thought it a waste of my money.
Activities: My daughter swam with the dolphins right there at the resort for $100 usd. She really enjoyed it! And you can get close enough for some good pictures yourself. They also take some and will try to sell you them but they are like $30 usd for one picture or $75 for 8 etc..Not worth it for that price. My daughter got to touch, swim and kiss the dolphin and then rode around on it briefly. It is a group setting, lasts less than an hour I think and time with the dolphin is really about 15-20 minutes of interaction closely.
Nightly we would go to dinners around 7pm and after go to the Strikers bowling alley for some pool or air hockey followed by a show starting at 9:30 at the theatre. A good show the few nights we stopped by. The bowling alley got a little rowdy with spring breakers at times. We think that they mostly hang around the tropical pool area, as we were at the Beach pool almost daily and it was fairly relaxed and mostly adults and families etc. We were there over prime spring break with alot of Minnesotans there! We did do the bowling one evening, it is $12 per person for 1 game. The air hockey and arcade games cost money too to get tokens. The pool is free, there are 3 tables in the back of the alley. There is also Mini Golf. It is free, if you go before 7pm. I believe they charge after 7? The mall, there is alot of shops there but they are all very high priced. Say $30 usd for a Big Bubba mug or photo frame. Speaking of, bring a mug from home and take it to the bar for your drinks! The ice is not good, melts really fast even in a insulated mug. Bring a inner tube or a cheap raft if you can, they are fun to have in the pool or at the beach. We met some kind ladies who were leaving and gave me and my daughter their rafts which we enjoyed using in the ocean. On our last day we kept on giving and found a nice lady and her 2 kids that were ecstatic to receive the floats and use them, to give them on when it was their last day! Far as the shopping, we went into Playa Del Carmen to get some tanks and tshirts and souveniers, the mall is too over priced. There is a mexican mall next to the new mall at Barcelos but we did not go in there to shop. We took a $20 cab ride to Playa, too expensive but oh well I think we got ripped off there. You can catch a bus for about $2 I heard...not for me tho! So we found some fun in Playa, stopped at Senor Frogs etc. If you want you can catch a ferry to Cozumel, if you do I hear best day to go there is Sunday as there are no cruise ships that stop at Cozumel on Sundays.
Tips: bring a mug, a raft or inner tube, lots of SUNSCREEN, and you will go through it like crazy, reapply often. if you run out it will cost you around $20 usd to get a bottle of sunscreen. More is better!
Maya Beach building has the best beach. Mostly sand bottom, not much seaweed. Looked like further over more seaweed but did not go over there. We were happy at the Beach section, some parts are rocky. Which is why a raft is nice and even a pair of watershoes!
Food/Buffet: not really impressed most of the time with the buffet; but I personally do not care for buffets. We liked the breakfast the best, toast fruit and cereal, make your own omelet offered. But not much for toppings and meat choices etc. The lunch buffets by the pool such as Captains Morgans offered someone to make a burger or pasta, which my daughter liked. The pizza is not good at all however. They offer hotdogs or fries, pretty basic and average choices but good to just grab a quick snack and head back to the pool!
At the end of it, I was happy with the place, the beach, the pools, the choices of things to do and the restaurants. The things I complain about, the drinks and the buffet...well they are not deal breakers but I wish they would improve upon them!
TERRIBLE SERVICE! NASTY ROOM!

We just got back from our Playa del Carmen Vaction. We stayed 2 nights at Barcelo Maya Beach and 5 nights at Paradisus La Esmeralda (which it wasnt available for 7 nights) All I can say is Thank god we had 5 nights to enjoy at a different awesome resort. Barcelo Maya has terrible customer serivice. Staff at front desk is not friendly at all, like you would expect at these places in Mexico.
Let me start with the arrival. We got there around 2 pm and they couldn't find our reservation for one hour. They made us wait forever and finally the front desk guy was able to confirm it with reservations departament. What a great welcome!
After being at the lobby fot a long time We finally got a room at Labna bulding and it was just nasty! Floors were dirty, bathroom gross! The bathtub was disgusting and screw up. We sat in our bed and after 30 minutes waiting for our bags i decided to call. We waited another 30 minutes and our bags never made it to the room. So i went myself and walked to the lobby to get them. There they were at the same spot where we had left them. They had no intentions to bring them to our room anytime soon!
When we tried to make a reservation for at least one night at any of the restaurants, we were told we couldnt because they requiered a minimum of 4 nights to eat at a restaurant. Really? They didn't tell me this anywhere on the website when I booked. They were so rude about it and trated me very bad. At the end, I got stuck eating at the buffet for 3 days!
The service at the pool its pretty much non existing. If you go to this place expecting a waitress to bring you a drink, then dont come to this hotel. Its pretty self service!
Not eveyrthing was awful about this place so I have to talk about positivie things as well. It has GREAT pools for kids. The Hotel itself its very big and nice. The service at the buffet is nice. Waiters are friendly. They have huge theaters where they have the night shows, it was nice. Beach is nice as well!
Overall, great building, pools, beach, but vert poor service. Like i said, compared to the other place where i stayed, Barcelo is hell as far a service.

Looks like other have had the same experience looking at just the past review, the front desk staff are not friendly, the food is not good, nor are the restaurants that you get the coupons for. You have to pay for Wi-Fi, but do get free, very slow Wi-Fi from 10-12 AM in the mall area. The beach and pool areas are very nice, you can swim with the fish and turtles (near the Palace). One good thing to say about the people there is the Customer Service people were great and very helpful, especially when our kids had an accident. My suggestion, get off the resort for a tour and see the real Mexico. We used Rod Ratner for a custom/private tour and it is memorable. Go to a Mayan village for some really good food.
Spring Break 2015 - Beautiful Grounds, Beach & Pool - Terrible Service and Staff

We just returned from a 7 day Spring Break vacation with about 20 teenagers and a handful of parents. The hotel grounds, beach and pool areas were all beautiful. Orlando who was in charge of the water aerobics, salsa lessons and dance activities at our pool was both hilarious and very friendly. The front desk staff were, as many previously commented, extremely rude and unfriendly. Not one of them smiled and all of them gave the impression that they did not like vacationers and disliked having to do their job and assist them. In addition, the restaurant hostesses were cold and as unfriendly as you can get without being borderline abusive. Most of the rest of the staff, also gave the impression that they disliked vacationers or at least in our case, Americans in general.
The buffet food was awful and they served the same food every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You do receive 4 coupons to allow you access to eat at what they consider their upscale restaurants, but as others stated, it was extremely difficult to make reservations that would accommodate parties larger than 6-8 people. Also, if you are remotely late for your reservation (10 minutes), they automatically cancel your reservation and honestly appear to enjoy watching you walk away angry.
It took them almost an hour to bring up our luggage. They charge you for wi-fi service that only works in some areas and only one person in your family can use it at a time. That's right, you physically need to log off the IP address in order for another person to be able to log on. The alternative you can purchase Wi-Fi for each person individually (another way for them to make money and make life more difficult for us).
The people in the gift shop didn't speak English and a small bottle of sunscreen was $32.00. Don't expect any servers/waiters to bring you water any time within 30 minutes of sitting at your table to eat, and if you dare get up to fetch the pitcher of water to pour your own, they literally grab it from your hands, snarl at you and then pour you a glass of water (honest, it happened 3 different times).
So I've come to this conclusion. The people who work there are all miserable, probably make very low wages and are resentful of all the people who get to vacation there. Little do they know that a friendly smile and good service could double their salaries as people always tip (well at least I always do) when they are treated well and respectfully.
The resort is beautiful but being around hundreds of people are supposed to be there to make your trip enjoyable but do the complete opposite, doesn't make for a great vacation in my opinion. There are plenty of beautiful resorts with really wonderful staff throughout Mexico, this one is definitely not one of them!

This was our 4th vacation in Riviera Maya. The Barcelo Resorts (even as a "Premium" guest) should not be rated as a 5 star, or even 4 star resort. If you have nothing to compare it to you won't be as disappointed as we were, but you probably won't care to book your next vacation in Riviera Maya and that is sad. The other 3 places we stayed before were excellent; food, service, people and accommodations excellent. However, if you want to go somewhere where food is disgusting, service is horrible, no one cares to accommodate or even try, where inappropriate behavior in their pools in front of children is acceptable and security is limited, then you will enjoy the Barcelo Resorts in Riviera Maya/Quintana Roo.
