Great value - overall very good experience

Spent one week at this resort Jan 26, first time to Huatulco and was quite pleased overall, especially the price. Booked the Wildwednesday deal back in Sept or Oct and paid $1390/pp from Saskatoon - awesome value for a week. The best points were the weather if you enjoy heat, the company we kept :), the very spacious clean room, very comfy beds/pillows, great rainhead shower with hand wand, beautiful view from room 464, nice beach with zero seaweed, awesome workers throughout the resort, felt very safe anywhere we went. Food was good, not anything special but decent and enough variety for a week. Spanish alacart was very good; esp the shrimp appy, mahi mahi and steak main course very good, went 3 times and once each to Italian and Mexican and did not find either as pleasing. Was nice that we were told we could book as many alacart as we wish, did not always have openings at desired time but they did a great job of accommodating us. Mini bar stocked daily and was no problem to request more of one item. Bartenders and beach service was wonderful, drinks all very good. Real glasses in lobby bar and restaurants but at pool or beach nice large plastic glasses that look like real frosted glass, best glasses we have ever been served with on beach. Negatives points would have to be the elevator type music in the restaurants etc - just found it to be annoying noise, would have enjoyed local music, but wonderful band in lobby. Requested king bed but got 2 doubles, which were impossible to comfortably sleep 2 adults - that was disappointing. Doors can be opened with key even when it is deadbolted, by maid or staff so found that uncomfortable. Tip for the resort would be to put pegs up on the palapas for guests to hang belongings. General points: took towels down to reserve palapa and chairs between 5:30 and 6:30 am and others had always been there by then too. It was important to us to have shade and be on the beach and this way we were able to enjoy the beach every day, so you just have to get down there early. There are 22 palapas in 3 rows on the beach, and I believe all were used each day, front row most popular. Very hot at pool but water temp was one of best, cool not ice cold. We did not have premium club so paid 390 peso for 6 days wifi which included 2 devices and worked pretty good but not in the room - worked on the balcony. Saw stingrays splashing most mornings, used resort kayaks and tried standup paddle board, float board and flippers for snorkelling - was ok for snorkelling right at resort but there are probably better places to go. Upon leaving, shuttle to airport was at least an hour late and line up to check in at airport very long, but flights all on time. Sunwing flight both ways came with only one drink service, for a 5.5 hr total flight was not enough, was very disappointed so bring your own water etc, also the TV is only enjoyable for 1/4 of the plane, too small and far away for most. Nice trip down to huatalco Barcelo . How ever when we first checked in we all had to check in around the corner where the meeting rooms are located found that odd. 2nd got a room with 2 double beds when I had requested a king room wasn't impressed and they didn't budge. When we got to our room we just pulled out the night stand and pushed the beds together i wish the hotel had more king size beds or at least a bed topper for doubles . Workers very friendly zenon at the pool bar very nice, Luis in main buffet also very friendly . Was surprised they make the men wear long pants for the a LA carts first time stayed in the resort that requires this. Lastly the night entertainment could be better, every single night was basically the same just different themed and all in mostly spanish. I think if I ever return will consider staying here again depending on price . More>

This was our second trip to Hautulco. We really love this area of Mexico. We stayed at the Barcelo this time. We had a wonderful time. We choose to go for New years, as we don't do anything when we are home. First time going for two weeks. New Years Eve party was awesome. Our beach service was excellent because of Fernando Catalans, he is such a hard worker and so very pleasant. Meyren (spelling may be wrong) was our server at the lobby bar at night; she is fantastic. Peace and love Meyren. The food was very good and the staff was mostly very friendly. We took in a couple of the shows and they were pretty good. We took a couple of the excursions that Sunwing offers. The first one was to Emerald Falls, it was excellent. Our driver and tour guide was Roberto and he was very good. I left my information with the Sunwing reps., to give to him so I could send school supplies to the school we stopped to visit on our way. But I don't think they gave it to him as I still haven't heard from him. A little disappointed. We also took the three level tour and that was excellent as well. Our driver and tour guide was Alberto. The coffee processing was so interesting and the coffee was great. The resort itself was nice, it was clean for the most part. The women's washroom in the lobby and the restaurant closest to the beach were sometimes not so clean. Was not impressed that you couldn't get certain drinks because they were classified as premium. We also took a couple a couple of private tours with friends we met while we were there. The first we hired a taxi for a trip to Puerto Escondido, it was great. Our taxi driver was Oscar Velasquez, he was very professional and he speaks English very well. He has a van so if you have a group, he can take you. A very good driver and very informative. We also did a private boat tour with Tico. His boat is called the Marisol. Had the greatest time, he is very responsible. We also went into town a few times, very safe. We stopped and had burgers at Mama Elsa's. Fabulous burgers. More>

First trip to Huatulco

We stayed at the Barcelo Huatulco January 19-26. It was our first trip to the area after many trips to the Akumal area on the Mayan side. The area itself was charming. Much more of a "small town feel". The airport was small, the drive to the resort was short and the weather was hot. The people were very friendly and a large number of them were bilingual or multilingual. We enjoyed getting to know a few tour guides - Oscar and Oscar, Saul, and Fernando. All were knowledgeable and personable. We did a city tour (this I would skip), a bay tour and the day trip to the Waterfalls. The waterfall trip was great for the drive alone. I most enjoyed seeing the local mountain villages. The Barcelo was fine - it is a family resort and quite a bit less upscale then the Barcelo in the Mayan. The rooms have been completely redone and they were great. We had a lovely view of the water and our balcony was comfortable. Our only room request was for a king size bed and this we did not receive. I seem to have bad luck with that - rarely do I get the bedding I prefer. :) Our travelling companions who booked last minute of course got a 6th floor room with a king bed but it wasn't a big deal. The staff were friendly and the service was pretty good. The adult section of the pool isn't super big and it was crowded but we are more beach people anyway. The beach has a pretty good slope to the water but it is clean and the sand is thick and nice. We found the snorkelling to be decent as well. Benjamin was always working hard making sure your drink cup was always full. Hard work in that heat. There are vendors (lots of them) on the beach selling everything from banana chips to dresses. The are frequent but not pushy. There are also lots of people selling boat tours or fishing on the beach. My husband did go out for a three hour fishing trip and was pleased with the guide and his boat. The only thing we didn't love about the Barcelo was the food. We tried all of the a la cartes and they were just ok. The buffet is also just ok and the way it is set up is problematic if it is busy. Much of the offerings are in a u shaped area, as is the cooking station so it could get quite crowded there. We ate off resort just once and it was decent. I felt very safe in the area and would walk outside of the resort in the evening with no worries. All in all we had a nice time. I most enjoyed the weather and the water. :) At the right price we would return. More>

My husband and I, celebrating our 65th birthdays, spent a week at Barcelo's from January 19 to 26th, 2016. Sunwing got us there on time. We were shuttled from airport to resort with an entertaining host. Luggage all arrived safely. Check in went well, received a refreshing drink call Conga. Our room was on the 4th floor overlooking the children's playground and partial beach. We were pleased with the room. Everything was clean. Disappointed that the room had only double beds, not even queen sized. We asked for king but couldn't get one. From time to time our bathroom didn't receive clean washcloths. Otherwise the room was very good. We were disappointed there was no free wifi. It was available for $50.00 a week. We felt that was a very high cost for a few texts a week, especially since it was available at the Italian Coffee Co. across the street for about $1.50. We felt there could have at least been free wifi in lobby. We tried to abide by the rules of not reserving chairs at the pool/beach. However, we quickly realized unless we did that there were no chairs available. I got up at 7 am to reserve a chair and many were already reserved. Because of the intense heat which we enjoyed, we wished there were more palapas on the beach. The food was excellent and the servers were amazing. They hustled and did their best to accommodate us. We especially appreciated Maria. We tried the 3 al a carte restaurants. Liked the Spanish the best. My husband liked them all. I didn't like the Mexican Mole in the Mexican restaurant....but that's a palate issue. I really appreciated the facts that it was quiet after 11 pm every night. Thank you for that. More>
