Hotel needs updating, restaurants are very good but you can only use them a total of 4 times. Then you would go to buffets, which were horrible. Food that should have been hot was cold, not a lot of variety. Adult pool had biting bugs at shallow end and dirty. Children were in adult pool a lot and no one seemed to care.
Very enjoyable week

The staff were great. All the restaurants were very enjoyable. The room was comfortable and we looked over the pools and to the water. The buffet had outdoor tables. This made even the buffet meals a little special. There were only 2 things that I would like to see improved. Perhaps they could select a sightly higher quality house wine. Sometimes, it was less than enjoyable. Not having free wifi in the lobby seems odd in this day and age. We were able to go across the street to the Italian coffee house and use their wifi, but it shouldn't be like that. Other than that, and they really are minor, this was the best all inclusive we have visited and plan to return next year.

My husband and I upgraded to Club Premium. The room was very small and had only two double beds. We were supposed to have turn down service every night, but in 7 days, it happened twice. The person working the club premium desk was less than helpful and certainly didn't seem to enjoy his job. We were not impressed with the a la carte at La Tortuga. The service was sparse and the food was not the greatest. I had a steak that was so tough and heavily seasoned in salt I couldn't eat it. At the buffets, the hot food was never hot, and sometimes not replenished as quickly as it should've been. Our kids had a room one floor up and their fridge was only stocked twice. This is definitely a resort I would not return to.
Nice but maybe not 5 Star

Just had a week there and did enjoy the stay but I would not rate it a 5 star hotel. All the staff were fantastic, friendly and helpful. Pool area, communal area and rooms were clean and well maintained by very hard working staff.
The a la carte dining options were disappointing apart from the Spanish which was excellent. I would probably stick to the buffet restaurant if I return.
Two things I did not like are more a management issue than anything else. The first being on arrival we were told the room was not available till 3 but we could change in a room, we thought ok so I was directed to the " room" The room I found was a communal toilet so I went back to the guy and asked where the room was and was again led to the toilet. In a 5 star all inclusive holiday you do not ask guests to change in a toilet.
The second point as others mentioned is the wifi and having to pay for each device, that and the fact the session expired I would say before it should have, would it really matter if it continued a couple of hours after midday checkout so allow use while waiting to be picked up for the airport?
So in short would I return? Yes I would, nice location, nice hotel, nice and varied choice of food and excellent staff. A special mention to the two girls who look after the kids in the pool, my son adored them and they made him feel special, the same goes for the buffet restaurant staff, friendly efficient and lovely people, reception and housekeeping staff too. They make your Hotel what it is
Not always worth the upgrade

This was our 3rd stay (2 weeks February 17-March 3/15) at the Barcelo Huatulco and we upgraded to the Club Premium and booked in advance of our trip. We received a Club Premium room (even numbered) and received a non-renovated room. View from the room was great but felt cheated with a old room. Others that checked in at the same time received a better rate for upgrading and received the renovated section (odd numbered) rooms. The Club Premium included WIFI, unlimited ala carte restaurants and lounge.
The buffet had theme nights which had a good selection of food in keeping with the theme. The ala carte restaurants was good but didn't always have the selection of food listed on the menu and didn't always get the food that was ordered. The Club Premium had special dinners throughout our stay, but they did not announce these dinners in advance and only found out when booking an ala carte. We only attended one Club Premium meal during our stay because of this oversight.
Chair games was in full force. Unless you are up at 5:30/6:00 am you did not get a chair in the shade. The entertainment staff was good but found that there is not much interaction with the guests at previous visits. The bar service needs to be improved. The removal of the beach bar was noticeable with the long delays at times for drinks. The staff are working like crazy and did a great job in keeping up with the demand this caused lack of consistency in the drink selection. Marshall the pool/beach waiter was great and remembered your drink selection every day. Tip all staff well. They deserve it.
Staff were great at providing kayaks and hobie cats and even provided additional service in guided tours with the water crafts. Special thanks to Fabrizio who did a great job.
Cannot go wrong with any of the tour operators. Do not believe JT (Nexus) when saying do not trust anyone but them. All tour operators are very good and trustworthy. The Nexus overnight trip to Oaxaca City was a great tours if you have the time. Roberto was a great tour guide and was very knowledgeable of the region.
Must ask how much before getting in to the cab. More than once there was varying prices based on where you want to go. This was not a problem or a requirement previously.
Overall, the Barcelo is a good budget minded hotel, but would not take advantage of the Club Premium as this is just not worth the additional cost. If looking to upgrade, would look to the Dreams in the future as this hotel provides much more bang for your buck in upgraded services. Note to management, renovate all club premium rooms before upgrading new "Deluxe rooms" and advise CP guests in advance of CP night meals.
