Returned from Barceló Huatulco Dec 9 of 2014. This was our 4th time back to Huatulco and back to Barceló since 2010. We have stayed for 2 weeks each trip , including this one. Travelled as a couple ( the wife & I )
Thanks to ; these are the people that we felt stood out and went out of their way to make sure we were looked after.
Fior , Miguel , Celso in Club Premium , which we upgraded to when we arrived , well worth it.
Edgar in Dona Rosa ,
Edgar & Carla from activities
Venancio & Ricardo , and Fernando in pool bar , Herndon in Lobby bar.
Lifeguard - Noe
Angela - choreographer & dancer
Pools - nice to see the lifeguards managing the guests to the proper pool , they were discreet but fair in trying to maintain the adult pool for adults only.
Food - is fine , good selection & you are never hungry. No issues.
People - as mentioned , everyone treated us great , and the people mentioned above deserve a special thank-you , thanks to Barceló for having such great staff members.
Rooms - we stayed in odd numbered room , was renovated and was fine. No issues.
Atmosphere & Entertainment - lobby bar is great meeting & wind down place , the nightly singers were great , the evening dancers in Teatro Oaxaca are a joy to watch , they pour their soul into each performance.
Beach - good , experienced some mosquitoes but rainy season has just finished.
Outlying area - La Crucecita is 10 minute cab ride. Locals are great to tourists. Great selection of shops and restaurants. We took a cab to La Bocana beach & Arrocito beach ( be prepared to climb down 79 stairs , I counted ) , had lunch at Oceans Bar at Arrocito beach - great food. At Alebrijes restaurant ( across from hotel around corner ) Luis will look after you , good food and good atmosphere. Shayla and Pavel are hotel based tour promoter - great people & lotsa fun. Crocs & turtles tour was great.
Value - I guess this is subjective but I consider the Barceló very good value , it is a smaller resort and I think is a great place to spend your vacation. Very safe.
Overall ( Captain Incredible my alias after I participated in the face painting ) with Carla from activities !!
Thanks Barceló for another great trip , can't wait to come back for trip # 5 !! Great job !!
I leave with " Los Mexicanos guente bueno !! "
Gerald & Trish from Vegreville
PS - met some great people from Regina & Moose Jaw !! ( Kelly , Liz , Janice , Shelly and their families )

We traveled Dec 2 -9 2014. I agree with many of the previous reviews. The beach and poolside experience is 4.5 star. If you don't go Barcelo Club upgrade you will end up with a 3 star room and 2 star tired, chipped in bad need of renovation bathroom ...but.... what do you want for $957 a week pp and frankly we had a great view with a fantastic comfortable balcony. Great value all, in all. We stayed 6 yrs ago paid much more and did stay in a renovated room with no complaints. We came back for the overall ambience of the property, typically Mexican, nice a la carte restaurants, buffet close to the gorgeous beach, and a great view of the ocean and palapa set ups from the beach side buffet restaurant. High quality entertainment in the lobby every evening provided by a fabulous 5 pc band and 2 lead singers that could kick the butt of any "The Voice" contestants! Honestly they would be Hollywood if it wasn't Mexico. Thank-you to the best fishing tour guide local, Tony Lopez Lopez who toured us thru all the local bays, took us to the unspoiled beaches, ( forget the tours from Sunwing direct, go local, better value, personal service) and Tony made the best I ever had, hand made margaritas! He also helped us bring toys to the poorest of the kids in the area and helped is with a kitty rescue project , Thank-you Tony and ask for him on the beach! All in all, it needs some renovation but great value, great beach, wonderful service! Tracy

This hotel is in a great place with the ocean just out front. The waves are fairly mild so swimming in the ocean is safe and fun. There are lots of activities like catamarans, snorkeling, kayaks, and body boarding. The hotel was great for kids and teens activities. The entertainment (sports) group at the hotel was very good and always had something to do. The night shows weren't the greatest though. The buffet food was good and the Mexican restaurant was great. The Japanese and Spanish restaurants were very bad (cold food, uncooked meat, no choice at the sushi place).

It sounds like a renovated room is important. How much does it cost to upgrade from a Superior Room to a Deluxe Room. I will be there in two days. There have been many comments about the unrenovated rooms being rather old, worn, and unpleasant and that it's important to get a newly renovated room.
