Re: Our Stay at Barcelo Huatulco Beach
Dear Mr. Avelar:
We recently vacationed at your hotel for two weeks, and had a wonderful time. We have vacationed at different Mexican beaches every year for many years, and this was our first time in Huatulco. It was also our first time at a Barcelo resort, and we are happy to say it was very enjoyable. The staff was exemplary. A few examples are below.
Initially, we had a problem with the reservation department when booking our stay.  Then, I called the hotel directly and asked for the Manager, and within a few minutes, Jessica Granados was fixing the problem.  Then, when we arrived at the hotel, she greeted us at check-in and left us assured our stay would be great. And ultimately, it was.
One night, guests in a neighboring room were making loud noise well after midnight.  We reported it a few times over a two hour period, and the next day Oscar Salinas moved us to the quietest room on the property.  He assured us we would not have any more problems sleeping, and we didn’t.
A day later, the air conditioning in our room stopped working, and Karla Mendez sent a repairman to fix it immediately, which was 8:30 at night.  Over the next few days, we had other small problems in the room, and Karla always had them fixed within minutes of calling her.  That was reassuring.
The same thing happened with our son using the gym (he is underage).  We wanted him to use the treadmill, and Karla found a way to make it happen.  I used the gym every other day, and found Paco and Edgar very pleasant and accommodating.  At one point, ocean swimming was closed for a few days, and it was great to have all of the sport and game facilities on site.  There was always many activities we could do at the hotel, and that was comforting.
Late one night, we needed water cameras for a rafting trip the next morning, and we found the gift shop did not have them.  We asked Claudia Liljehulth how we could get them, and within about an hour, she had them at her desk.  That was incredible customer service, and it gave the impression the hotel cared about us.
The Tortuga Bar had albondigas one night, and my husband raved about them. He grew up with them, and said these albondigas were just like the ones his mom used to make. He personally thanked Jaime Simone for making them, and in turn, Jaime made a whole pan of them for us a few days later. That was well above normal customer service, and again, it gave the impression the hotel cared about us. Also in that restaurant, Ricardo Pacheco is one of the smoothest hosts we have ever seen. He did anything and everything to make us comfortable, and he initiated chit-chat at every chance, which made us feel appreciated.
On a side note, Pavey and Shiela were very proficient at arranging several excursions for us.  The atv's, rafting, waterfalls, bay and city tours were very enjoyable and fairly priced.  We took their advice on mass at a Church in La Crucecita on Father's Day, and that was especially rewarding for us. We realize Pavey and Shiela are vendors, but they can add or detract from a good hotel, and they definitely added.
Lastly, everyone in the hotel was consistently courteous, always called us by name and greeted our kids, and always ended our conversations with "my pleasure".  This type of interaction made it our pleasure to be served by your staff.
We stayed for two weeks, but wish we could have stayed longer.  We thank you for helping us make great memories on our vacation.  We understand the Barcelo brand now, and we would love to visit another Barcelo resort sometime soon. Feel free to contact us if you would like more information about our stay.
Great Vacation Hotel, Excellent Stay, Relaxing & Exciting
2 adults and 2 kids and we stayed for 2 weeks.
The room was big and had lots of windows, bright and airy. The beds were very comfortable, the sheets were a quality high thread count, and the pillows were plush. For the most part, it was quiet at night and easy to sleep, but a few times we were awakened by guys spraying for mosquitoes during the night. Also, the pool entertainer starts to practice on the microphone at 9:30 am, making it hard to sleep. The housekeeping service was good, everything was cleaned and in order every day. However, the housekeeping crew also left the sliding door on our balcony open a few times, which overworked the air conditioner, which led it to freeze over and stop working.
The wi-fi in our room worked ok, usually slow, and sometimes it faded in and out. Sometimes we had five bars but no internet, couldn't figure.
The gym has a good selection of weights and cardio machines, and adjacent showers, sauna and massage area. Lush towels, nice music, big windows, friendly attendants, cold bottled water.
The buffet restaurants were superb, the food was original, authentic Mexican food made at a high-class level. The flavors were exceptional, and everything was very good and elegantly presented. Our longest wait for a table was about 2 minutes. All the buffets had a small gringo section with hamburgers, chicken nuggets, french fries, etc. We didn't go to the ala cart restaurants because they have a long-pants dress code for men, which we think is crazy when on vacation. The room service food was good, and although it had a somewhat limited menu, they would bring anything we requested.
All of the grounds were full of well-manicured bushes and trees, lots of lush greenery, and it was always very clean. The pool was very clean and fairly big, although it is divided into 3 sections: adults with a bar, family pool, and little kid pool. Sometimes in the hottest part of the day, the pool water was luke-warm, kind of like room temperature, not refreshing. There were lots of families with kids in the pools every day.
The beach was great, never crowded, sometimes the waves were rough, but most times the ocean was very enjoyable, the sand is course, and several times we spent hours in the water. Beware, there is a drop-off a short way out, and sometimes a strong under current. Forget about seashells, an full half-shell is one in ten million, the rest are bits and pieces. There are plenty of lounge chairs and palapas on the beach and at the pool.
We visited La Crucecita and Santa Cruz (a 5-10 minute drive), and they are very small towns with shops selling typical tourist fare. We could walk each of these towns in about an hour or so. Both towns have a church, and they are old-world wonderful. Taxis are plentiful and very cheap, $3 to go to town, $4 to go to the other town, one way.
We took tours to the waterfalls, nine bays, atv riding and white-water rafting, and all were great, but beware the waterfalls tour has a fair amount of hiking, and the nine bays tour had a lot of hot sun slow-boat cruise time. Air-conditioned vans take you to some, open-air cattle trucks (with you in the back) take you to others, and some take all day. They were very good overall and fairly priced.
The whole area is very safe, it is a hotel zone at the beach, and we did not see any crime or even anything that looked scary in the hotel zone and both towns.
All of the hotel staff was always friendly and courteous, including in the restaurants, we found everyone to be pleasant and accommodating. Everything we asked for was taken care of, anything we needed was provided, and anything that was not right was fixed fast. It is a well-run hotel. We would go back in a heartbeat.
Nice service and good food
We had a very nice time during the weekend. The waiters at the bars and restaurants were very gently and nice, especially Benjamin in the beach bar (La tortuga). You should try the kayaks and sailing ship.
Food poisoning on the first day!
The first night we got in I ate at one of their restaurants and almost immediately became sick. I've lived in Mexico for three years so I'm accustomed to eating locally and I was unable to eat or drink for the next day and a half (of a three day trip.)
Not only that but we assumed that all included meant that everything was included. Not so. Want internet? You have to pay extra? Want more than bottom-shelf liquor? You have to pay extra. Want beer in a bottle or can? Extra. Yes, you are only allowed a small plastic cup of beer.
Throughout our trip we were met with unwelcoming people and policies. For example when I was sick in the room on the second day an employee came by, took off our "do not disturb" sign and insisted that they clean the room. The next day when we finally left our room for a few hours they didn't come and clean so we called and asked them to in one hour and instead of waiting they barged in on us in the bathroom!
Next we go to one of their four (not seven restaurants). What happens is that on some days they change the regular restaurant to an Italian one by putting red checked table cloths out. We had a reservation at 7:00 but arrived at 7:13 and were told that we were not going to be seated in the EMPTY restaurant.
We paid $200 a night for this kind of treatment. This is the last time we stay at a Barcelo property. They are obviously trying to cut corners in any way they can and as a result they mistreat their clients. Don't waste your money here. There are many reasonably-priced hotels in the area. You will have a much better experience than at Barcelo.
No pierdes tu dinero aqui. Hay muchos lugares donde puedes pasar buenas vacaciones sin sentirse robado al salir.
Relaxing and Fun -ENG/SPA
Went last week and have a fantastic time. Hotel is very clean, very fresh and service is good. Its beach is fantastic and not very crowded, although surge is pretty strong. Open restaurant is good specially during breakfast; there are thematic diners and lots of desserts. Only thing is, although open bar is essential for all inclusive plans, the staff should have a better control over it... We saw at least 3 guys dragging out the pool area, not cool, specially being a familiar facility. Place is 20 minutes away from the airport and 15 from the town -I strongly recommend to book a hotel tour to it.
