1 week @ Barcelo Huatulco - Very good value.

We spent one week at this resort in April. 2 rooms, two families. I'll start with the things we liked: - Great location: the hotel is only 25 min away from the airport. - Early check in makes it comfortable: we had our room ready and we were on the beach by 1:30 in the afternoon. - Cleanliness: the resort, the rooms, the restaurants, the pools, the beach are very clean and in great condition. - Staffing: Staff is excellent. On two different occasions, the staff actually exceeded our expectations. Very impressed. - Food: Buffet – great variety of tasty food. Fish, chicken, beef and pork on a daily basis. Turkey and rabbit were a great addition when available. Short lines for cooking stations. A La Carte – good food depending on your choice. We tried Tortuga and Agave only. - Swimming pool: two for kids and one for adults. Warm water and opened until 9 insh. - GYM: very well equipped with free weights, machines, treadmills and bikes. Equipment in great shape!!! - Game room: well above average. Pool table, Xbox, ping pong tables, air hockey and more. Better equipped compared to any resort I've ever been to. The things that could be improved: - Reducing the price of internet or offer a reception only free or limited Wi-Fi area. We found Wi-Fi to be on the expensive side at 14CAD per device per day, as between the five of us, we had 10+ devices… - Improve command of English for your staff. This will improve an already great experience. - Halfway during our stay the music/entertainment station was moved from the kids pool to the adults pool. Perfect move, great music mixes and aqua aerobics provided by the gentleman in red shirt. Sorry I couldn't remember his name. Keep it there if possible. - A La Carte @ Tortuga – would be good to put the price on the wine bottle. I was expecting to pay for it as I had during our previous stays at other resorts. What I was not expecting was the price to be almost twice the price we pay for the same bottle in Canada. Overall: We thought this hotel offered great value for the money and we were surprised by the small number of tourists. 75% of the people in the resort appeared to be locals. If you enjoy spending the day in calm, waist deep water that goes for miles, this place may not be for you. The ocean is rough and it gets very deep quickly. If you're a decent swimmer, no problem there. Note: if you're a light sleeper, you may want to bring your ear plugs. Not sure if the hallways acted like an amplifier in our section or the doors are hollow but most conversation that happens in the hallway can be heard loud and clear from your bed. More>

The hotel is located in a perfect bay where the water is calm. You can actually swim/snorkel really far without any strong current. We enjoyed kayaking in the ocean every single day and enjoyed looking at the amazing private residences on top of the hill and just being out in the ocean! It was also our first time to rent a jet ski as we found it was cheaper there as compared to the resorts in Cancun/Riviera Maya that we've been to. The hotel is older but is well maintained. It is clean wherever you go. Our room was situated on the ground floor backing onto a garden facing the ocean which was perfect! It had a comfortable bed but pillows were not that great, they would go flat when you lay down on it. Bathroom had a rain shower which I really liked. The maid service was great, our room was cleaned thoroughly every single day. Restaurant staff were great as well, they will do everything to please us. We requested for dishes (seafood paella and squid ink risotto) that were not on their menu. They didn't have squid ink and the proper rice for the risotto so they substituted it with shrimps and another type of rice and it came out pretty close to an authentic risotto. What impressed us most is that they accommodated our request and they tried their best to deliver. Least things we didn't like: There was one restaurant (Italian) that we didn't like the service as it was slow - we figured may be it was because of its small kitchen with fewer cooks/chefs. We thought their gym was not great, the machines are really old and not well kept. One last thing, the resort do not offer free Wifi, they charge US$45 per week for 2 gadgets. Funny thing, the Sunwing rep inside the hotel tipped us about alternative places where you can get Wifi service for a lot cheaper! Overall, it was good value for what we paid for. More>

For the most part, my wife and i were very happy with our experience at the Barcelo. Great location, nice variety of food, terrific beach and fabulous weather. Couple of minor complaints. We got a room with two beds and they are very small. They are double beds, not queen-size, and I'd highly recommend requesting a room with one king bed. Also, one of the pools, which are very nice, is designated as adult-only. Usually it was, but at times kids made their way into the pool and some of the staff turned a blind eye rather than enforcing the rules. That was disappointing. More>

We loved everything about this place, but we travelled Apr 5 - 12 and it was just too hot. Lots of shade to be had, no complaints, but just too hot for us. This was our second trip, but at a different time, and it is an awesome place. The staff, food, location was great. Many kudos to the Spanish restaurant, our fave. All staff great, not a one to complain about. More>

I met my sister there. We hadn't seen each other for 4 years. We are planning to return next year for 2 weeks. I have never had better food on any of my vacations, including Hawaii & Europe. We might convince friends to come with us next year. More>
