Would not return to this resort.......ever!

Let me start off by saying, this resort was not chosen by my husband and I, we tagged along with another couple that were friends of ours and already booked this trip. I was a bit skeptical in the beginning based on the reviews on trip advisor, but typically we can make the best of any situation. This resort was completely below even what I thought I would find. Our travels have taken us all over the Caribbean for the last 10 years to many all inclusive resorts and this by far was our worst experience. Upon check in, we were told they had "upgraded" us to a junior suite, when we booked an ocean front room, when I asked if it was ocean front, I was told it was not and there were not any ocean front rooms available. Weird, since that is what we booked, but, ok, first problem, the building we were in was renovated, but it was not in the adults only section. The room itself was satisfactory, nice sitting area, the bed was decent, I agree with other reviewers that I didn't enjoy that the toilet room had a frosted door, even for just the two of us, it was not enough privacy. After check in, you then have to stand in line at guest services to book dinner reservations at the a la cart restaurants, well that was a nightmare. We had to rely on "cancellations" to get into any of them and our reservations were always for 9pm or later, we do not like to eat late, but had no choice and we couldn't even eat at 2 of the restaurants, because I refuse to pay to eat at an a la cart restaurant at an "all inclusive resort". I have never been to any other all inclusive that charges for you to eat at certain restaurants. Never! Please don't label your resort all inclusive when you are going to exclude things, like restaurants and wifi. Again, we have never been to a resort that doesn't have wifi included, for the amount you pay to stay here you should be able to communicate via email. Thank goodness, I didn't have to work, but some people do and this non amenity is a super inconvenience in my opinion. Ok, so for the food, we ended up missing all of our dinner reservations b/c our friends failed to realize that men needed pants and closed toe shoes. This doesn't upset me so much b/c I have seen it before at all inclusive and we were prepared, but, we were there to all spend time together and this was a super inconvenience. It is the Caribbean and we have been to plenty other resorts that not only don't require pants, but they let you eat where you want when you want. At one restaurant, while we were waiting I went to the bar to order a drink and was completely harassed by the bartender, I simply asked for a glass of red wine (which I don't recommend) and was asked if I had a reservation, of which I replied, I did and then I was asked what my room number was.....really? I am wearing a bracelet showing I am staying there and last time I checked that meant I should be able to get a drink at any bar on the property. Needless to say, the service left a lot to be desired. The beach is very nice, I didn't find the seaweed a problem at all, I've seen it a lot worse in Mexico, they did a very good job at beach up keep and there were always plenty of chairs. There is no drink service at the beach or pool and you have to get up and stand in line at the one pool/beach bar to get a cocktail. I am not used to that at an all inclusive, also, people do reserve chairs at the pool early, which I also find irritating when they don't show up until after lunch. Take away from this review what you will, but, we will not be back to any Barcelo' property, if you want a quality property, check out Dreams, if we ever went back to the DR, it would be to a Dreams, but I doubt we will take our chances. There are beautiful beaches all over the Caribbean, Punta Cana does not corner the market on that!! Best of luck in your travels!! More>

Absolutely Perfect Stay...Strongly Recommend A.O. Side and Club Premier!!

My wife and I traveled for 5 days Jan 27-Feb 1, 2016. This was my wife's first ever stay at an all-inclusive. This stay was perfect. I'll run through some details; but setting expectations is key. There are two "connected" resorts: Bavaro Beach Adults Only and Palace Deluxe. We stayed at Adults Only. Before going I upgraded to a package with Superior Ocean Front Room Club Premier. If you have the means, I strongly recommend the upgrade to Premier. With it you get: - one on one check- in service in VIP lounge - Free WiFi - Access to VIP lounge food, drinks, wifi and very responsive personnel throughout your stay - Premium liquors - Access to Kyoto and Le Commedie restaurants - Premium wines at dinners ...and more Check In: First our arranged shuttle from the airport was flawless and easy. Second we bypassed check in lines and sat in the Premier lounge with a glass of champagne to check in with Raquel who was wonderful. We arranged our evening meals for the next five nights and booked a tee time. A bellboy carried our bags to the room. Quick and easy! The Room: Beautiful! King bed room looking out to the ocean. The beach was literally 15 yards from our sliding glass door. We had table and chairs along with two loungers accommodated by being on the ground floor. We received a bottle of Ron Barceló Imperial rum in our room (again with premier). Fridge was stocked with beer and water and remained stocked throughout our stay. Plenty of room and bathroom was nice with two separate sinks. We were in building 2000 which we loved location-wise. We will request it when we return. Dining: Buffets are provided for breakfast and lunch. I've heard people complain about the lack of selection...I have no idea what they expect. Quality wise: they are buffets. Set your expectations. But there are stations where fish or meat or pasta is cooked to order. Omelets or pancakes cooked to order. There was more than enough selection! On the Palace side service is slower and the tension is infinitely higher!! People have kids and want to get in and out and become frustrated when things are not moving as quickly as they feel they should. After one trip there we stayed on A.O. side for breakfast and lunch. The Premier Lounge offers very nice snacks and nice continental breakfast everyday. We found ourselves stopping in there regularly. Ala Cartes: Our favorite was Kyoto teppenaki and sushi by far. Very fresh and tasty!! next was Chez Gourmet on the A.O. side. Those two stood out; Le Commedie was very good as well. The Hoyo 19 restaurant at the golf course is primarily nicer sandwiches and Panini's with a beautiful patio looking out on the course. A nice get away. All in all food was what we expected with some exceptional standouts. Again, at an all inclusive we were not expecting a 5 star meal every night; set expectations. Some things better than others, but we had nothing that was bad. Entertainment: This was surprisingly good to us!! There are two theaters: a HUGE one in the Palace and cozier one on the A.O. side. They rotate shows. It was fun. Disco was loud and fun. Premier gave us access to the VIP upstairs with our own bartended...nice. Golf was really spectacular! Beautiful course. Packed a cooled for us. The "free" round was $70/person for a cart but we were able to later apply out voucher towards it. Great! Pools and Property: Flawless. Simply beautiful. The grounds are spotless and maintained to a tee. The beaches are combed every morning and kept spotless. Not quite sure why others complain so much about the sea weed; yes there is some. Beach is gorgeous and water definitely swimmable...and we did! The pools are all beautiful and meticulously maintained. We went to the swim up bar at the Palace once but then retreated back to the A.O. We loved our time at the pool and beach...really, that's what you go for! Truly, I can't say enough about the entire grounds. The walkways; the topiary; the statues and lighting that set a definite mood; the bars all really enhanced the overall experience. Even peacocks! Service: I've seen repeated complaints about service and certainly there will be different experiences and slip ups. But again, I really think it is about setting expectations. We did tip regularly, but not until we received service. We had no problems what so ever. Bartenders and certain servers saw us a recognized us. Our room was cleaned, stocked and turned down consistently. I travel weekly for work. I am not singing these praises as someone who does not know good or bad service; we had exactly ZERO issues with service. When we asked; we received. We met some people who had a issue with a room (two queens instead of king); they rectified the problem and took care of them. They were extremely happy with the resolution. The final note is on WiFi. This is the biggest, most widely read complaint. We used wifi only for brief emails or checking something (Facebook; weather; books) and had no issues. If trying to stream or download, or sending pictures, that is where problems apparently occur. These problem are enhanced when charged a crazy fee for the service. this has to be an incredibly easy fix for the hotel; I don't know why they don't address it to resolve these complaints. As you can tell: we were more than happy with our trip and our choice of accommodation!! We will be back...perhaps next year with a larger group! I can't wait to return!! More>

First time in Dominican Republic and what a trip! Thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Super friendly service. I recommend all inclusive package. The drinks were amazing! Ocean front view room was nice. I enjoyed being able to take the trolley from the adult only side to the family side of the resort. I'll definitely be coming back! More>
