Wonderful week

For our fifth trip to the DR and first to Punta Cana, we joined another couple for some golf and sun. Our overall impression ranks Barcelo Bavaro Beach among the top of the resorts we've visited over the years and we would return in a heartbeat. In its favor are comfortable and well equipped rooms. While room service was a bit spotty with the room cleaned at inconsistent times and with variable effort, the fridge was always kept stocked. The beach was stellar and there were no issues getting loungers. We usually planted ourselves on the very edge of the beach by the "shopping center". The advantage of having vendors restricted to this area is that we were not constantly accosted by roaming entrepreneurs (as was our experience at other resorts). Be warned that once you cross the line into the shopping center, you're fair game. White on rice comes to mind. The swimming area at the beach is roped off which is good as there is a constant parade of power boats, often blaring music, advertising to the beach crowd how much fun could be expected on board if you didn't particularly care about the state of your hearing. We did do one excursion, bought at the shopping center. The agent, a Canadian, will give you a fair price. We snorkeled for about an hour by the reef, cruised by a dolphin show, and then proceeded to a shallow bit of water to putter around for a while in what is ostensibly the confluence of the Atlantic and the Caribbean Sea. It was a fun outing. Look for a gringo with a maple leaf and he'll set you up. As for the resort's golf course, it was a challenging bit of business for a hacker like me but enjoyable nonetheless. While rounds are free and the course is happy to pick you up at the resort, the carts are $65 USD per person. And no, they're just regular carts -- no wet bar, no magic fingers, no subliminal messages about what a good golfer you are. Free has never been so expensive. As for the restaurants, here they are in our order of preference: * Santa Fe Steak House -- Visited twice. Consistently good quality and service. * La Fuente Spanish restaurant -- Nice atmosphere and great fare. * Mexico Lindo -- Good food. One of the servers was perhaps a little too exuberant. * La Brisa -- Glacially slow service but we didn't mind given a spectacular view of the moonlit ocean. * Buffet -- Good selection but the morning coffee fairies weren't as abundant as one would have wished. * Hoyo 19 Golf Bar -- A comfortable spot to drown your sorrows regarding your game and the fact that you just blew $65 on a cart. This was my 4th visit. I was flying from Canada and my friend from England. I had emailed the resort prior to our arrival to request our rooms be close. We were in block 2 and both had partial views of the ocean. I also on my email booked our restaurants. The Chez gourmet is excellent. The chateaubriand and lamb were perfect. I eat here every visit and I'm never disappointed. We went to the Italian. The appetizers were very good but our pasta was cold and tasteless. The service was poor and very slow we left before our dessert. I have tried the steak, seafood and Brisas and didn't like the food. Also when you eat on the Palace side there are children. I much prefer the buffet, food choices and quality of food. I ate most days lobster and shrimp. They also have good pizza. The lobby bar makes the best drinks but for a cool quiet spot in the evenings go to the pool bar. Most people don't realize it is open in the evening. Some of the staff have limited English. In a bar on the palace side no one could understand soda water and lime. I need to learn how to say this in Spanish for my next visit. I kept getting a bottle of water. The beach is stunning. There are lots of beach chairs ....no need to play the towel game and the resort was full. The pool chairs go quickly but we always managed to find 2 late afternoon. The rooms are just like pictured. The bath tub is very high and you have to reach in far to get the grab bar. Being a senior I had to be very careful getting in and out....especially as the shampoo leaked and dripped into the tub. We had a ground floor room that has a table and chairs and also 2 lounge chairs. The bar fridge has water, soft drinks, beer and also free snacks. We started putting out our clean rooms signs as we left in the morning as 2 days we arrived back at 4 and our rooms were not cleaned till later, The grounds are very beautiful and well maintained. Other years we have had a bottle of rum in our room...non this year. I flew with Sunwing. When comparing tour company priced be aware that sunwing is the only company where you pay arrival and departure tax. The other tour companies include the $30. in their price. This resort is only 15 mins from the airport. I don't watch the shows. I have seen too many in the past and they no longer interest me. I really like this resort and will return More>

Special thanks to The chef, Norquelis, at the sea food section. She was very friendly and accommodating. It was our second time Barcelo experience. The Spa experience was very nice. The beach is nice too. I would come back. More>

The chef, Norquelis, did an outstanding job accommodating my food allergies. I have Celiac Disease and she was able to hand-prepare my meals in a Gluten-Free, Allergy-Free zone. The fresh dishes were delicious, filling and above my expectations. She even prepared my husband and I a gluten-free dessert. We would gladly stay at this resort and seek out Norquelis in the future.
