If this part of the hotel was not attached to the rest of the resort this could've been a pretty terrible weekend. The adults only section is SMALL - one pool, two bars, and the workers on this side were not very friendly or happy. There happened to be a large group which I can only describe as pretty classless - loud, obnoxious, multiple speakers blasting music in addition to the resort music, also purchasing bottles which made the pool bar seem more like a (trashy) club than a resort. They were also quite rude. Luckily they didn't come out until the afternoon so the mornings were peaceful. This certainly wasn't the hotels fault, but in combination with the fact that the activities and most of the food options were on the family side of the resort it was enough to make my boyrfriend and I take the walk over every day.
More on the lack of food and activities - there were only two options on the adult side and while they had basically the same options the family side was just better, seemed cleaner, and the staff was SO MUCH friendlier. Also, not that we had any interest in the family oriented activities but we did want to use the snorkels, paddle boats, etc and those were all the way at the end of the resort. There was a train but we're young and fit so we just walked - and i left with sore legs! Probably not the worst to make up for the calories in all the drinks and food. Drinks - so sugary. I know this is pretty standard for all inclusives, but these were so sugary I couldn't even stomach them. I swear they must dump heaploads of sugar in to all the mixes. The food was also sugary. There were some edible options and it wasn't the worst food I've had at an all inclusive but I would rate it pretty low.
The lobby was really nice but the rooms are in need of some updating. Again, not the worst but certainly nothing to write home about. Housekeeping also didn't come until the late afternoon. This wasn't usually a problem as we spent the entire day outside but it was a bit annoying if we stopped in and found our room still a mess - there aren't that many rooms I can't imagine why it took so long!
The family side was really nice (can't speak to the rooms) - beautiful and well maintained grounds, very friendly staff (the pool bar guys & the short girl were tons of fun!), and lots of activities. However, we wanted an adults only for a reason and so we were bummed we needed to spend our time on the family side.
Also, no free wifi not even the lobby - i find that really odd. This wasn't a deal breaker at all. We werent going to pay for it and it was nice to be unplugged but in 2015 I just find it odd that the lobby area didnt have it.
Lesson learned - we will stick to resorts that are ONLY adults only so that they are better equipped and larger. Barcelo Bavaro was, for the most part, a beautiful resort but the adults section seemed like the forgotten step child. I would not recommend this resort to any couples or groups looking for adults only, however, if you are OK with a family resort that is HUGE (seriously it took like 15 minutes to drive off the resort compound) then the family side of Barcelo is a nice option.

Beginning of May. Adults only! No fighting screaming kids any where near. Pool clean. Beach daily swept, lots of places to find shade-just have to keep moving your chair on the beach. If you want action walk (5 min on boardwalk stone path) to the connected other resort Barcelo Bavaro Palace. The main restaurant was never crowded-always got a seat for the 4 of us. Food was just alright, but plentiful. My only issue was the BOOMING speakers on beach. I guess some people enjoy the loud music, but I did not appreciate the speakers from about 11am until 3pm. HEADACHE! The fitness facility is at the Palace (5 min walk), 5 treadmills, 5 ellipticals, oodles of weight machines and free weights. Another room for spinning- 5 bikes. Another room with mats-yoga, large bouncy balls. Water tank to refill your bottles- BRING your own bottle. BEST part was the wedding held at the Palace-outisde under shaded palapa. Oh yes....you had to PAY for WIFI! Not cool.

Before going to another country you should get familiar w/ the native tongue. I wouldn't expect the staff to know EVERY language that visit the resort. With that being said, I think the staff could try to learn a few terms in other languages. Some of the staff was pretty good w/ speaking English & others, not so much. If my one semester of Spanish and my demo version of Rosetta Stone hadn't kicked in, we probably would've been in a world of hurt. So do your due diligence and learn Spanish.
The staff, cooks, cleaning & maintenance mainly, were not that pleasant. Some would speak and some wouldn't. They didn't seem too happy. A group of housekeepers were standing around talking about some of us Americans & a person in our group was fluent in Spanish. He went over and read them the riot act. I'm not sure if he told on them or not although he said he would.
It was really hot in the DR. When I got to my room, which felt like it was miles away from the lobby, there was no AC. I called the front desk after 30 mins of sitting and fiddling w/ the thermostat, after calling a friends room to see how her thermostat was set. They said they would send maintenance. I sat for 20 mins waiting for maintenance. I called back and he came in ~10 mins. He tinkered w/ the vents to no avail. To get into the room you slide your card into the door. There's a panel on the wall for a key also, which activates the lights. The maintenance man said this key needed to remain in there in order for the AC to function. This meant I needed two keys else I would suffer upon returning to my room after being out of it all day and having my key. This bit of information was not provided upon check in. I kept the key in the wall, while I sat for another 30 mins, but the room didn't get any cooler. I went to the front desk to change rooms and they told me they didn't have any more rooms but may have some the next day. I bugged them the entire night until I got a new room. I had to sleep in a friends room that night because of the new room they "found" for me. When I was walked to the new room & the door was opened I was greeted by 2 roaches. The bell guy removed them, however the room was cooler. I was too frustrated, annoyed & hot to keep complaining so I wiped the entire room down w/ my Clorox wipes and prayed that I didn't see any more bugs, none crawled on me & I didn't take any back home with me. My prayers worked. However I did find out why there were roaches in the room. Apparently they don't clean the rooms that great. A plate of green chocolate & furry strawberry was sitting on the table w/ a letter dated the day before I checked in (5/22) & a bottle of rum that I preceded to drink after taking a shower. BTW, the water wouldn't drain while I showered. I had water around my lower calves during my shower. Things couldn't get any worse so I drank the rum. I refused to call the front desk because I got the run around, they didn't answer the phone and/or the phone was answered and immediately hung up on. I will probably chalk it up (front desk assistance only) to the hotel being booked to capacity. We were there w/ a nationally syndicated radio show & there was another big group of people there.
Two people were robbed, at gun point, by the taxi drivers. I don't believe they had any affiliation w/ the hotel. Money, debit cards, ID & one even had his passport taken. He couldn't file a police report because they wanted him to take another taxi (HA!) to the police station, which costed $20 they didn't have. Not sure what happened to the one whose passport was taken. Be aware & keep your passport in the safe when out on the town.
I also didn't find the food that appealing.
The grounds were beautiful and beautifully maintained. There was a lot to do.
An amazing property with a reasonable all inclusive experience

First the property.
The Adults only resort is an enclave within the larger overall property and it would be possible to stay within the adult end entirely. It includes bars, restaurants and pools, massage, lovely beach and a nightly show. But it it, maybe, ¼ of the total resort. A shuttle train or a 15 minute walk away through the grounds or along the beach is the family friendly end with many more restaurants, an impressive shopping centre and more pools, bars and watersports centre.
You'll need to decide where you plan to eat as soon as you arrive to book several days in advance. While the buffets are always available, the more elaborate restaurants need reservations several days in advance.
A smattering of Spanish is very helpful as many of the staff have limited English. At least try to learn the greetings and words of thanks.

Visited this resort Memorial Day weekend and I loved every bit of it. Arrived Thursday afternoon around 1:30pm. Since it was not time to check in the front desk attendant suggested we visit any of the pool, bars or near by lunch buffets to wait. We did some exploring before stopping by the bar for a round of drinks. The view from the lobby is breathtakingly beautiful, with various mosaic sculptures. Beds were very comfortable and the rooms were nice and clean. Didn't spend much time in the room but we had a beautiful view of the beach from the first floor. The food in the buffet was very average, but the dinner restaurants made up for it. Visited La Brisa for seafood dinner and the steakhouse while there. The Wifi in our room had a really bad connection- which is probably my only complaint. We never touched the TV.
