A perfect return to the resort

We stayed at this resort about a year ago. (You can click on my profile to read my last review.) When it was time to book our annual winter getaway, our decision to come back was made pretty quickly. We wanted the familiarity so we don't 'waste' any time exploring the resort, amenities and the restaurant. We wanted a great pool and beautiful beach. We wanted to have entertainment options at night if we wanted it. And selfishly, I wanted to play a round of golf! We had no issues during our entire stay from 2/25 to 3/5. We got a room in building 1, which was next to the pool, close to the beach, lobby and the main buffet restaurant. I had no issues with booking, and then re-booking, the golf at the resort course (The Lakes). Got our bookings at the time we wanted for the a la carte restaurants we wanted. We were very selective and targeted with what we wanted, given that we've been here before, and the resort staff was accommodating with everything. A word of caution though... Unfortunately, during this period, it was spring break and there was a huge group of students from one school. Although it was annoying at times as the spring breakers would just hang around the bar, which made it hard to order a drink. However, we just rolled with the punches and eventually they went to the Disco at the adjacent sister resort or off the resort. This has nothing to do with the resort, but it's something that future visitors should be aware of.

Very nice beach

We stayed March 3-17 at the Barceló Bavaro Beach Adults Only. Paying extra for "Prestige" class gives you direct return transfers to & from the airport with separate check-in, a bottle of rum in your room, robes & slippers, and guaranteed reservations 5 nights/week at the a la carte restaurants. The drivers at the airport have no idea what Prestige booking is, only the hotel they are driving to, and since the Bavaro Grand is the first hotel stop from the airport the "direct transfer" is of little value; guests staying at the main hotel are dropped off first. Once you're at Bavaro Beach you wait in the same line to register as everyone else, Prestige class or not. Reception staff are consistently courteous, professional and their English is very good, but there are not always enough on shift. There was no bellman immediately available so our check-in agent (Aneudy) very kindly carted our suitcases to our room himself. There is a bank machine in the lobby that dispenses Dominican Pesos (DOP), and you can change pesos for different DOP paper denominations at reception. US $ are accepted pretty much everywhere, including as tips. The buildings are 3 floors with either a terrace or balcony in every room. There are elevators and stairs. We had a "pool view" room on the 3rd floor of building #1 with a view of not only the pool but the ocean as well, which was a great bonus. The room was old and needed updating but was large, clean, well-appointed and well-lit. The hair dryer worked surprisingly well and they provide plenty of bath gel, shampoo and conditioner. Hot water and water pressure were good. There is a large, dual sink counter and vanity stool just inside the door that is separate from the small toilet and shower room. The drain stoppers didn't work well so if you want to hand wash you're out of luck (I removed the bag and washed an already clean garbage bucket for this). There is ample closet space with lots of shelving but if you are staying for 2 weeks you may need a few more hangers. The room itself had good storage space for 2, with a small table and 2 chairs for in-room dining, a desk and chair, effective, quiet air conditioning and a ceiling fan. There is a small coffee-maker with bottled water; use 2 of the coffee packets per pot if you want more taste in your java. The promised bottle of rum is small (~750 ml) but adds flavour to coffee as well as to various mixers from the bar fridge, which is stocked daily. There is a small but nice balcony with a table & 2 chairs and a small pull-out drying rack. With the overhang and angle the balcony is well-protected from both wind and rain, if you get any. Our maid kept everything, including the balcony, very clean. The pool, grounds and beach are very well maintained. They must spray for mosquitos because I only got 3 bites in 2 weeks and did not use repellant. Food quality and variety are quite good at the buffet, but we liked Chez Gourmet a la carte best for food quality, presentation, ambiance and excellent service. Chez Gourmet is included in your package (good wines are extra $) so please remember to tip the servers well. The gift shop is very well stocked and has most convenient hours; I did a terrible packing job and found everything I needed there. The main section of the hotel (families) is like a small city; it's large, full of shops (mostly mid to higher end clothing), bars and restaurants. The resort train runs more frequently than advertised, but the whole resort is easy walking distance for the able-bodied and if it rains you can get from one end to the other under a covered walkway. The best feature of the resort is the beach. Fine white sand that's cool under your feet and clear, calm turquoise water of the perfect temperature, dotted with little under-water areas of sea grass. There are lots of loungers and palm trees so there is no need to reserve chairs but people do anyway. This is NOT a quiet beach. Excursions launch 1/2 km down the beach and every boat goes by playing their tunes cranked. If they aren't playing music their engines are cranked. If there are no boats in a 15 minute period there are helicopters to fill the gap in noise. The lobby bar, rooms, buffet and pool in this section are adults-only but the beach is not. Families with small kids will sometimes leave their section and come play at this part of the beach. There were NO beach vendors at this section, which was a relief. There was no beach bar service, but we set up close enough to the pool bar that it wasn't a problem. I totally agree with not allowing food out of the buffet restaurant; people would break glass all over the pool and beach area or leave garbage out and create a bird and rat problem. Nightly shows start after 9:00 so if you are an early-to-bed type choose a room away from the pool. The soundproofing in this building is poor so you can clearly hear your neighbours flushing toilets, closing dresser drawers, walking on the tiles in their rooms and shutting their room doors. Take ear plugs or sleep aids if you're a light sleeper. On the other hand, the beds are comfortable and you have a choice of pillow: firm, medium or soft-- if you can't find one you like here you should probably travel with your own. Service was inconsistent; many staff were friendly and pleasant but many were simply functional. Breakfast at Caribe buffet typically involves getting your own coffee at auto-vending machines in the dining area, since servers are often slow to bring it to your table even after asking if you want it. These machines dispense drinks like the ones at gas stations: shots of espresso and flavours with hot water added afterwards to make volume rather than real coffee. Drink service at dinner was generally better. If you seek peace and quiet you need to find another resort, but if you're happy with some activity and noise on a pretty nice beach--or you want a good pool without small kids making merry in it--you'll likely be happy with Barcelo Bavaro Beach.

Keeping it short and sweet. This is what we found important.

This resort was what we were looking for and expected. The adults only side of the resort was not very crowded, and somewhat quieter than the Palace. I highly recommend the adults only "The Beach". Our standard room was clean, had a comfortable bed, nice TV and balcony. It has a free safe, plenty of closet space and free mini bar. The bathroom vanity area was nice and had 2 sinks. The tub/shower room was dated yet the room was clean, plenty of hot water and good pressure. Maid service did a fine job. They don't do any extras though, like bed turn down service or make animals out of towels. Pool has a nice large unique shape with pleasant water temperature, plenty of lounge chairs and not overly crowded. Some fun activities going on there too. Drinks at the nearby bars were also good. The beach is one of the best I have experienced. Wide white sandy beach with hundreds of palm trees and plants. Lots of lounge chairs in small pods, not just lined up in a row. You can walk for miles in either direction and the views are incredible. The ocean water is very clear and a beautiful Caribbean blue color and in mid March was very comfortable. Night time entertainment was fair. I know this will be a personal thing, but for us, we were a bit bored and were hoping for a bit more trendy. There is entertainment at this resort and the Palace and you can attend either place. They had shows with Michael Jackson, Madonna, Vegas shows, Vegas headliners from a while back. Also a band playing rock music from the 70's Not bad shows, but they do seem outdated. We went to the disco twice. It opens at 11:00. The first hour isn't too bad and then it switches to house music with a lot of rap. The disco is geared towards 20 - 30 year olds. I would like to have seen the resort have dancing geared towards 35 to 50 year olds. Restaurants. Our favorite was LaBrisa with a special shout out to Luis. He is very personable and goes above and beyond to make you comfortable. This restaurant had the best lunch time buffet and best sit down restaurant in the evening. The rack of lamb was awesome, but stay away from the pork loin. We had read great reviews about the Chez Gourmet, but our service there is just okay and the food was nothing special. The Caribe buffet was always good. Went there for dinner once and was impressed with how they presented the dinner selections. At the Palace, we really enjoyed the Spanish restaurant. I had low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. The Seafood restaurant and Steak restaurants were not impressive. I don't believe they have access to good steaks in the Dominican. On the golf course is the 19th hole restaurant, it is a very good place for lunch and not a far walk to get there. The staff at this resort is friendly and more than willing to assist you. There are at times communication gaps where you think they understood what you are saying, but they didn't. I can't blame them, there are so many languages being spoke at this resort and I can only speak English. I was really impressed that they do as well as they do. Overall, it was a great experience. We had a fabulous time and enjoyed ourselves a lot. We recommend this place. I'm sure you will too.

We were at the Barcelo Bavaro Beach-Adults Only side 3-10 to 3-16 and it was very nice. ** We got the private shuttle through expedia-Blue from airport to resort and back. From the aiport to resort--chaos--was disappointing--took a while to get our ride, but then nice due to no other stops once ride came--straight there. Trip back from resort to airport was awesome--on time and no problems. ** We signed up for the premium level, which is recommended. We went straight to the premium level room and signed in, received drinks, made our reservations for dinners and went to our room. Also included were the pool massages, which were great! Spa had hydro therapy included but it was at the palace/family side, so didn't make it to that. **Japanese restaurant definitely the best one. Luis was fantastic and the food was all awesome. Coral restaurant on family side, so alittle noisey and food was good but very small portions of what we got. We were still hungry. We also went to Lacomedia which was hit and miss--My husbands meal was good and mine was not. La Brisa has a great buffet for lunch. There is only the one buffet on adult side and two restaurants, which we heard were good, but needed reservations. Buffet on adult side is pretty good--omelet guy was fantastic-wish i could remember his name-- ** We only did the Reef Explorer excursion, which was well worth it. Ana did my massage and it was fantastic! We snorkeled around the cage on the reef and then also in the cages with sharks and sting rays. You could float/standup board, etc. 11 activities to choose from. ** Shows were pretty good, but the Magic show and Michael Jackson were fantastic! Dancers were very good!!! **Plenty of seating on beach and pool, just didn't like having to go over to the palace for the casino, spa, most of restaurants and water sports. Walkways are fantastic and not a long walk just alittle inconvenient... **Beach is beautiful and can walk for miles....private beach in front of this resort but down the way they hit you up for shopping, cigars, etc. Just walk in front of this resort if dont want to be hassled... **Booking excursions and return transportation to airport was total chaos. Area very small, but people nice, just chaotic. **Service in rooms was hit and miss. The first 3 days we had towels and cleaned and after that we would not get wash rags or swept ... No biggee except for the daily towels/washrags and sweeping up the sand. **Drinks were good-recommend to take your own cups so dont have to go back as often :) (just alittle tidbit) All in all a great trip!
