The hotel was beautiful with a lot of care for the landscaping. Extremely clean & all rooms had ocean views. Beach is tiny & really rocky when we were there. Walked to pier inPlaya Linda an sand was black, assuming from all of the boats that go back and forth Food was OK and not being gourmet food afficianados - it was a little disappointing especially at the specialty restaurants. We were there for a week and could only do the speciality restaurants 3 times. The rest of the time you are stuck with the buffet, which was bad but nothing special either. Cave/pool bar was closed & resort was not crowded at all except at the infinity pool. Gorgeous view from the pool Had a massage at the spa & while prices were great (compared to US spa prices) the massage wax not very peaceful. Loud noises/voices outside of room. Took taxi from airport , much cheaper than shuttle. Took taxi to a flea market in Zihuantenejo good prices - much better than playa linda. Taxi drivers not very outgoing or friendly. Crocodile farm at playa linda was nice to see but plan to hold your nose. We have been to Puerto Vallarta, Nuevo Vallarta, Cancun, playa del carmen, Cozumel & now Ixtapa. Unfortunately this was our least favorite resort/trip. Cozumel has been favorite because people were so friendly, it was clean & absolutely beautiful.

Not a fan!

I would love to write a 5 star review because it would mean our stay would have been fabulous. Unfortunately, it isn’t a 5 star hotel. It is an average hotel in a nice location. We have stayed in numerous all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, and this one doesn't compare. Unfortunately, we had a security issue that was disconcerting, one that caused us to depart our vacation early, but unrelated to that, this is a review of the hotel unrelated to that. My husband and I arrived with plans to stay for a week. Ixtapa has been on my bucket list and we were excited to stay here. The rooms are nice, each with an ocean view, a spa tub, and tile floors and are clean. We know they are clean because our room smells so strongly of Pine Sol we can hardly stand it. Once we open the doors, it gets somewhat better, but the smell never really leaves. The food is a great dichotomy. The daily 3 meal a day buffet is average at best. There is not much variety and not what one would expect for a 4.5 star hotel. On the other hand, the specialty restaurants are fabulous. Unfortunately, you only get three dinners per week in the good restaurants, and if there is a dinner show, it counts as one of your three decent dinners. We had two excellent dinners during our stay. Although advertised as a hotel with a beach, the beach in front of the hotel is very small and dirty. There is a small roped off area that you share with the pelicans diving for fish. We did swim in it and it was ok, but not a 4.5 star hotel beach. The pools at the hotel are beautiful. There is an adult pool for those who wish to isolate themselves away from the ocean, but we loved the infinity pool by the ocean so we chose to deal with the many, MANY children using squirting toys and doing cannon balls at our feet. Yes, we could have moved away, but it truly seemed like the lifeguards should have monitored them. Although internet at the hotel is free in public areas, there is a charge for Wi-Fi in your room. The public area Wi-Fi is very weak so it was worth it to us to pay for in-room Wi-Fi, something we didn't anticipate at an all-inclusive. I would like to add that even in public places, the internet access is very unreliable, so if you need reliable internet, you will have to pay additional cost for it. The "stocked" mini-bar consisted of a very small refrigerator with one beer and one coke per person per day. The advertising suggested a stocked mini bar, so my husband and I were surprised by the “mini-bar” with a coke and a beer. Not your usual stocked mini-bar. As my husband and I like to spend time on our balcony reading, we asked if they would put 2 beers in the refrigerator for each of us per day. Although they said they would, in the 5 days we spent there, it never happened. We did not ask again. On another note, if you need to exchange money, make sure you do so prior to your stay. There is no opportunity here to exchange dollars for pesos. When I asked at the front desk, they looked at me rather dumfounded that I would make such a request. Perhaps I should take responsibility, but we didn’t realize we would have such a need for cash. We later found out there is a cash machine, but no one ever told us that was an option. Although we have always felt very comfortable booking hotels and traveling in Mexico, and we love the people and the culture, in our past experience there was always someone at the hotel who speaks English well enough to provide assistance. Not so here. Even the concierge, with whom we spoke to ask about activities wasn't able to help us. We have traveled all over the world and the language barrier at this hotel is the biggest gap we have experienced. If we were traveling to a hotel where there were few tourists, I would totally understand, anticipate it, and come prepared, but this hotel was booked through Alaska Air Vacations and I anticipated that we would be able to communicate with someone when we needed help. Not so. Unfortunately, we will never go back. We left two days early. It was not what we expected, and definitely does not compare to the other all-inclusive vacation destinations in which we have stayed in Mexico. I recommend you look elsewhere if you are looking for a fabulous all-inclusive vacation!

The hotel is spotless in all areas. The staff are helpful and very willing to help you. The food is very good . The buffet was small but we could always find enough to eat. The la a carte restaurants were very good. The room service was wonderful you get it on rolling table and set out very nicely. My daughter with 2 small children had it for the children twice a day , breakfast and dinner. She said it was the best resort no fighting with tried children in restaurants. The pools were nice a pool just for children they had a great time playing in that one. The entertainment in the evening was very good. There was no beach at the resort but you could walk the broad walk to their sister hotel next door. They have a nice beach. If you near to cover up in the pool you need to have a swim shirt or you will be asked to leave the pool. They are very strict about it. We had a exceptional vacation would go again.

ok, so i never thought i'd ever, EVER, attend or even want to attend a Destination Wedding, but i did. my very sweet friend Miriam invited me. and i said yes. and i'm so glad i did. and so is my (equally reluctant) boyfriend! if you ever decide to do a 5 star vacation, this is it. normally i choose rustic and simple vacations. off the beaten track is my thing. but the Azul Grand (not the one with the Convention Center attached) (yes, it's confusing) is something worth experiencing. it seems every room has an ocean view. even from the jacuzzi! you can truly hear the waves crashing on the beach. the restaurants all have amazing views. the beach is small, but worth it. the boardwalk connects this newer hotel with the Azul Convention Centre hotel which has a bigger, busier beach and hosts all the coolest beach activities. we went sea-kayaking and explored the island, and also enjoyed a lovely catamaran voyage at sunset. walk a bit further on the beach and discover an open-air market. cool stuff. low prices. real people. even the lamest attempts at spanish are encouraged. there are nightly shows at the convention centre next door (which we could kinda see from our balcony) and they are worth crashing or even placing a reservation for. also, Sunwing offers free room service. no kidding. there is a Botanical Garden right next door, actually between the 2 resorts, and the birds are colourful and vocal and even the iguanas are willing to show themselves. it's a wonderful place to indulge yourself and also to experience the true beauty this part of the world has to offer.

Top Notch Experience

The Azul Grande Ixtapa was the perfect location for our Fizzy Friday Ladies Getaway. Six Canadian ladies with different tastes and interests all had a wonderful time at this all-inclusive resort from April 6 to 13, 2017 (booked through Sunwing). Our three rooms were on the 23rd floors. The rooms were large, clean, well appointed and had gorgeous ocean views. I found the bed to be very comfortable. Housekeeping was excellent, always seeming to make our rooms up quickly during the day. I always found our room made up if I came back in the mid afternoon for a siesta. The resort is clean and very well maintained. There are 3 large swimming pools and at least 5 jacuzzi spas (kept warm, not hot). Plants and flowers are abundant, and there are comfortable seating areas in almost every area of the resort. I enjoyed the variety of dining experiences at the Azul Grande. Breakfast selections were plentiful at the buffet. For a change of scenery, the Oyster Bar located along the boardwalk serves a very nice breakfast, buffet style as well as eggs made to order. Dinners at the various a la carte restaurants were very nice. I was especially impressed with the level of service at the a la carte restaurants. Friendly, efficient, helpful and charming, never rushing us through our meals. Drink service by waiters was a nice touch at the adult pool. If one didn't want to wait 5 or 10 minutes for a drink to be delivered to your lounge chair, you could simply walk a couple dozen metres to pool bar. A week with good friends, lovely sunny weather, and warm Mexican hospitality at a beautiful resort made this a vacation to remember. I definitely hope to return someday.
