Beautiful Hotel - Inside and Out

My wife and I had a very nice time. The hotel itself was beautiful, our suite was huge (it had a hot tub, sauna, two bathrooms, large living room, private balcony with a table...). The pools were clean and not too crowded. The food was adequate (never been to an all-inclusive with wonderful food). The maid service was spotty -- our room was cleaned every day, but only got turn down service 2 of the 4 nights, one day our hand-towels were taken and not replaced, the refrigerator was empty the first day, stocked the second, then never restocked. They do try to sell you a vacation package club, but that is normal in Mexican resorts (for the record, we bought it this time as it was the first we ever found made financial sense for us).

We loved it here!

My friend and I just got back from a 2-night stay at the Azul Ixtapa Grand. We had a wonderful time. The room and pools were beautiful and the included activities were great! I went on a kayaking and snorkeling trip out to Ixtapa Island, a catamaran sail, and a bicycle tour. There is even entertainment at night and we went to a nice dance show one of the nights. The wifi in the public areas worked well most of the time (the last afternoon it was pretty much unusable, but the rest of the time we had no issues at all.) All the staff were very friendly and courteous. We ate at the Italian restaurant our first night there and it was excellent! The buffet was on the mediocre side, but still quite acceptable. I would definitely go back if I got the chance.

Not as expected.

We visited the Azul Ixtapa Grand from November 10 through the 16th. Based on the reviews, my husband and I had hoped to have a better overall experience. We did not have a bad experience, but felt that the hotel could have been better. Three out of the six days we were here, the infinity pool was closed due to repairs. The swim up bar was closed and they told us that it was closed for the week. You are only allowed to make reservations at the a la carte restaurants based on the number of days you are booked at the resort. We stayed for six days so we were allowed three reservations. Also, not all of the restaurants are open on a daily basis and there were many times where there was only one of the a la carte restaurants open. They also don't tell you that you have an option to make a reservation at the Oyster Bar which is part of their sister hotel. There are also employees who are designated to advise you of the "daily activities" when they are actually trying to convince you to do a "promotion" for a massage at a nominal amount as long as you go to the sister resort for a presentation and tour. They do not admit it is for a time share and they do not stop bothering you until you practically have to be rude about it. Most of the staff were really nice and accommodating and we had no complaints with the staff other then with the time share staff. The beach is rather small so we did not visit or spend time at the beach at all. We went off the resort and experienced other adventures, which I recommend as there isn't much to do at the resort. There is only one bar offered at night other than the disco, which we also did not visit as it was raining and it was a little off the resort. Our experience was nice and relaxing but we will not visit again. We have visited many resorts that offer much more and perhaps if the hotel staff reads this, they will consider making changes to their hotel to offer a better experience for their guests.

I stayed at this hotel from Tuesday, Nov. 1st thru Friday, Nov. 4th. I traveled with my husband along with my 19 month old son. The hotel was almost empty on Tuesday and Wednesday. By Thursday afternoon, there were 3-4 check-in lines opened with people waiting in line. Our room was on the 19th floor. It had a perfect ocean view with a big balcony, a really nice comfortable bed, a large Jacuzzi, and a variety of great TV channels. We requested a crib for our son, and they had one ready for us! The room was also very clean. My only complaint was the water temperature in the shower. It would go from warm to very hot; or from cold to very hot. I had to be very careful when I showered my son. The pools at the facility were beautiful and very well kept. They don’t have a big beach, but our time was well spent at the pool side. We did 1 dinner a la carte. It was at the Mexican restaurant. The food was great, and the service was excellent! The buffet restaurant had different themes every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Our waiter Eric treated us very well! We like to tip well, but unfortunately we did not see many people tipping!! The nightly entertainment was great. You have to walk next door to see the shows but we enjoyed every one of them! Also, the hotel has a lobby bar with a lot of TVs, pool tables, and ping-pong tables. This was a great location to watch the World Series. They had good music too. One last thing, this hotel is away from the “hotel zone.” We rented a car, so when we passed the “hotel zone” we thought we were lost. Come to learn that this hotel is closer to Playa Linda than it is to the “hotel zone.” It didn’t bother us since it is located in a beautiful location.

Great week

This hotel was almost empty during our trip Oct 21 - 28 maybe 20% at most. Got a very nice room on the 18th floor with a perfect ocean view, really nice bed, very clean and some good TV channels in English. Only complaint was the water temperature in the shower would go from warm to cold to very hot, you need to be careful with it. We did 3 ala cart dinners and they were fine but not great, some items were very good and others not so much but service was always good. We did the kayak tour to Ixtapa Island and the bike tour, both were excellent and would do again, we were the only ones on the bike tour and only about 5 couples for the kayak. The Azul Ixtapa was much more busier with kids but had a nice beach. We did walk down to Playa Linda for massages $200 pesos for an hour and one sea food lunch, the lunch was just ok but the massages were a steal. We also had 4 meals in Zihuatanejo and 1 dinner in Ixtapa, the food outside the hotel is much better and very reasonably priced, it's just the taxi ride that makes it a little expensive. The one hint I have is to order room service, it's $70 pesos for the delivery but you can order as much as you want and the food was way better than any place else in the hotel, the arrachera steak was as tender as filet mignon and fries actually came to you warm and crispy. The actually wheel it on a table into your room. The first time we ordered I signed for the service charge and gave the guy a 70 peso tip which is the same amount as the service. They actually called me back a few minutes later just to confirm that it was a tip! We hope to do this trip again next year as it was an excellent value and a great hotel. Also the good stuff at the lobby bar is under the counter out of sight, you just have to ask for it as they did have goose and crown royal. I would suggest tipping, unfortunately we did not see anyone else tipping as wages are very low here.
