Maui “hotel” on the beach

What Aston Manana isn’t: A hotel. When we booked with Am Ex, we thought we were staying at a hotel. No. This is a building of apartments, owned and leased out as hotel lrooms. There is no restaurant, no valet, no help with luggage. The “hotel” also charges a $20 additional fee every night you stay as an “amenity” fee. The only amenity is a pool & hot tub. You have no choice but to pay. Apparently, this kind of free occurs all over the island. I’m presuming they’ve identified consumers’ breaking points and just decided to tack money on once you arrive. What it is: Cheap. And on the water. Ours had a small kitchenette. I use both terms to describe the size. You can barely open the dishwasher since the clearance to the frig is one finger width. Has a small uncomfortably seated balcony and nightstands that come up to your chin. Someone was really thinking that day. There is a shop and rob down the street, a nail salon, slappy cakes for breakfast and a farmer’s market if you want to cook in the tiny Italy bitty kitchen. It’s equipped with a toaster & your daily quota of bad coffee-doled out in two pack increments. If you want to use the safe, there’s a key that will be charged $35 to you if you fail to return it. ...they guard it like gold apparently. It’s far from the airport and the road to Hana. Had we known it was going to be apartments, we’d have sprung for Andaz or something more corporate. You can’t realky use their beach because the tide dissolves their 36” beach frontage twice a day. This is a quite generous review, actually. I could go into detail on the dvd rentals and the lack of hot water, but notice how I abstain. Bring extra bricks and charging cords. Something about this island sucks energy from camera & phone batteries like nothing we’ve ever seen. All four travellers struggled to keep GoPros & drones charged on an hourly basis & had to use the additional portable battery charger & Jeep for charging as well. What Aston Manana isn’t: A hotel. This Maui “hotel” is near the West Maui Forest Reserve, but quite far away from the Hana Highway and the airport. OGG airport is about 45 minutes away and the traffic speed is 35-45 MPh... not hyperbole.

This is our second visit to Maui and we stayed here both times. The staff is friendly and efficient. Our room had a spectacular view of the ocean and palms. Our room was kept stocked and clean every day. The snorkeling at our beach was phenominal! It is a quiet more private resort. Great for couples. The pool and hot tub are open early in the morning to late at night. Close to the grocery store, water shops, restaurants, and tour pier. Kapalua Bay, another great snorkeling spot, is just a few miles up the road. We would stay here again on our next trip to Maui.

Great location - room needs an update

Stayed here for 5 nights in September. 1 bedroom ground floor apartment. Check in was pleasant and easy. Location was great. Walking distance to shopping centre and greater Jazz bar across the road. 10 minute drive to Lahaina. View was unbeatable as per the photos from our room. The decor of the room (Condo which I guess is privately owned but rented out to Aston Mahana) was very dated. If it had a fresh paint job and furniture was updated then it would be 5*. TV controls were cumbersome and we couldn’t work out the DVD player at all. Housekeeping woke us at 8.30 one morning which was a bit annoying. At the right price would definitely stay again.

Our little oasis

So here's the thing- if you are really looking for a large resort atmosphere with a ton of people, activities, and entertainment at every turn, this is not the right place for you. However, if you're cool with having a floor to ceiling ocean view, quiet neighbors, and a chill atmosphere without a lot of chaos- this is where you need to be! My husband and I had done a lot of research before heading to Hawaii on our honeymoon, and although reviews for some of the other Ka'anapali resorts were incredible, we knew we wanted accommodations that were simple, classy, and a little more "grown up" for our honeymoon. Us 30-somethings were probably the youngest people there, which was 100% what we were going for :) There is one little pool in between the buildings, which we saw a handful of people in at any given time, and you are literally steps from the beach & ocean. The condo-tel amenities were perfect for what we needed- washer/dryer, a coffee pot, full fridge, and basic dishes and utensils, and there was always plenty of parking for our rental car, and a super convenient side entrance from the parking lot, so getting from the car to our room never took more than about 30 seconds. We saw the other nearby resorts (that were lovely, don't get me wrong!) but we were so so so incredibly happy with our choice to go "simpler" and feel like we had our own private little oasis back at our resort. Very little interaction with anyone else while we were there, which we were fine with! Again, if you need a party, go elsewhere, but if you want a quiet, romantic, convenient place to stay- the Aston Mahana is where it's at.

Paradise right on the ocean.

The photos say it all. We stayed at the Aston having found the room on VRBO. Our space is right on the ocean and every suite in this building faces onto it. We spent our days walking out onto the most gorgeous beaches on Kaanapali. Snorkeling was fabulous and every time out we encountered many beautiful fish and sea turtles. The Aston had a concierge and a wonderful pool and is adjacent to all of the big hotels, so you can stop in and enjoy happy hour and sit by their pools too.
