We had an amazing stay

Thank you so much for the amazing stay! We had a wonderful vacation. Staff was very friendly, the hotel room was lovely, towels were soft & the bed was the comfiest bed I have ever slept on. We do wish our view was better, although having starbucks at your fingertips is pretty luxurious. We also wish the room had come with a refrigerator, as we had food we would have liked to store, but overall it was a wonderful stay. We would absolutely go back! The private island is unbelievably beautiful. We miss it so much!

Property is great. Customer service is horrible

So if you are going for a great view and a nice pool, this is your hotel. If you are looking for customer service and appreciation by the hotel staff, move on. Before arriving, i was told that upon check in, I would receive an upgrade for being a Platinum Elite Marriott Member. Upon checking in, I requested a room on a high level and I was denied. Not only did I not get the upgrade but I wasn't even given a choice of floor level. I am guessing that our room was near some kind of loading dock because every night at 11pm all you heard for about an hour was trucks backing up. This was so annoying. Also, there was construction going on every day around the pool and made the air smell and the noises were atrocious. I spoke with the front desk numerous times about the noises in my room and they could care less. Finally after 3 days of being in the hotel, they offered me a room on a higher floor. This is completely unacceptable. The hotel was not sold out and they should have accommodated me at my first request, as a customer, never mind as a Platinum Marriott Member. I have also contacted Marriott twice since I left and I am waiting for a response and/or survey but nobody has replied to my requests.

So maybe the name is new, but before going we read many positive reviews of the Marriott under a slightly different name, so I was shocked by what we found on arrival. We booked a Premium Ocean Front room, with two Queen Beds and a crib - we were travelling for Easter with two kids. I have Elite Status (Starwood, so this was my very first attempt since the merger at trying a Marriott) and called ahead to ensure they would honor it. We also called ahead to ensure they could accommodate us arriving 1 hour early to check in, to confirm the two queens and the crib. I knew something was funny when we called and they couldn't help us make advanced reservations, recommend a babysitter, etc - I instantly had a bad feeling that the service would be below standard. Well...I was right - WORST SERVICE. We arrived, as planning 1 hour before the 4pm check in - yet the room they had promised would be ready was not. When we did get a room, it was basically like a motel 6 - super basic. It did not have the two queens. It did not have an ocean view. It did not have a crib. I returned to reception for the first of three times on 2 hours. When I did, I overheard others complaining of similar experiences. When I challenged, I was told that my booked room would not be available for 2 nights, but that I could move in to it mid way through my stay and accept 100$ - excuse me - you just sent me to a lesser room than what I paid for but weren't going to admit it, and now cant resolve it? Overbooked I was told - but really this was happening to many other guests. We took the kids to the pool while we waited for them to resolve the room situation - Basically like Chuckie Cheese meets basic motel pool. Crowded, messy, noisy - nowhere to sit, no service in sight, towels and garbage everywhere and crazy loud music. The conversations we overheard were all people complaining about service issue, difficulty getting a chair, difficulty getting a drink, difficulty feeding their kids... As I went to get the towels, I encountered the beach reality - Also very overcrowded with lines for towels and no available chairs. The people working the beach hut might as well have been from the US post office, because they seemed to be deliberately ignoring the folks in line and basically telling people to start lining up at 5am to get a shaded spot. The Palapa drama was well documented on trip advisor, but I think what I failed to understand for seeing it in person was that I wouldn't even get a spot on the beach?! By this time I returned to reception to learn there was noting they would do to help us - I walked in on one poor family freaking out because they had book 3 suits a year earlier and were being placed in crappy rooms. The stress at reception was high. I walked down to the beach, which was jammed all the way to the waters edge - people were fighting over chairs, screaming to get the servers attention, generally it reminded me of being at LGA on a ground delay - STRESS and FRUSTRATION on everyone's face. I called the Ritz from the water's edge and booked a room. I then returned to reception for the 3rd time - and this time they could not have been more gracious. Basically relived that I was leaving so they could give the room to one of the many other disgruntled people - They helped us transfer to the Ritz and generally admitted that they were never going to be able to fix our room. NEVER GO - Marriott should be ashamed - treating people who have traveled all the way there and are paying 800$ a night like cattle - lazy and disgusting. The facilities are basic and insufficient, the service is terrible and there is no way they didn't go in to the Easter weekend knowing they were going to screw over many guests - they had no problem booking the reservation, but seemed shocked that guests expected what they had paid for.

Great Hotel for a great family vacation!

My family and I loved our week long stay here. We stayed at an ocean view room which was exactly as advertised. We had two queen beds, spacious room, great view, and all the amenities you would expect from a nice hotel. The pool was outstanding and the beach was also very nice. The people on the property were all awesome from the housekeeping to the pool servers and the restaurants. Two complaints that keep it from a five star: First, when we arrived they had us in a king bed room. We had requested two queens and even followed up a week prior to coming and they confirmed. So our greeting was not the best. They did fix this but we should not have had to deal with the hectic beginning of our stay. Second, we had very noisy people who were staying directly above us that woke us up several mornings at 7am. We made several calls to the hotel about it but it never got better. Aside from those two things all in all, a great stay at a great place. I would recommend.

The hotel was packed and seemed short staffed for the high season. Everyone was very friendly but... the shortage of double bed rooms; beach towels; pool chairs; palapas; and at one point lunch (sat down at 2pm and was told we had to wait 20 minutes to even place our lunch order because the kitchen was backed up - didn't matter if we switched restaurants at the hotel because we were told all the food comes out of the same kitchen) - room was not cleaned until after 3pm daily, empty cups and food containers laying around outside by the pool. It was kind of a bummer. Seemed like most issues could have been fixed simply by having additional staffing. I won't waste anyone's time going into a long review - just know the hotel is pretty, the pool is nice and the rooms were a perfect size (bathroom too). I would say the biggest issue was the pool/palapa situation. People were going out in the middle of the night to put down towels on chairs - no policing of this and def. no employees removing towels from chairs 'unused after 2 hours' as the signs stated. You can easily get caught up in trying to get out super early in the am to get a chair but that was not how we wanted to spend our vacation. We would end up finding a chair during the day and that was enough for us - no sitting still with a 6 year old! Palapa situation was nonsensical as well... checked in on Sunday at 4:30pm - went down to register for one ($30/day) - was told they were all booked till Thursday! The only other option is to get up at 5:30am and sit there till 7am in order to try and get one of the free palapas. Again, not doing that on my vacation. We were able to book one for Thursday and yes it was well worth it - nice to be able to order food and drink and have it delivered to your palapa and nice to get out of the sun. Again no one policing the palapas and the palapa in front off us remained empty all day - not a chair or towel ever brought over to it. Disappointing that they didn't track this and give it to someone who actually wanted to use it. So once again - a little more staffing to control these pool/palapa issues would make this hotel go from good to great!
