I was a little surprise I had to pay 20.00 per bag on the trip from Denver to Costa Rica. That was an extra 80.00 I did not expect. The rooms were poor. Had to change rooms to even get one that the stool worked. Sliding doors terrible. The food was not very good. I would at the most say a .. More>

When we arrived at the Allegro Papagayo, the Apple Rep (provided by Swiss travel in Costa Rica) met all of those that arrived on the shuttle and helped us Register. The resort may not be the newest or fanciest, but it was in a tropical setting with visible animals and beautiful scenery. Who is staying in their hotel room at in Costa Rica anyways?!?!? Food was great in the buffet. Difficulty getting reservations at the restaurants, seemed like a game. .. More>

While this resort is located on the Papagayo Gulf with gorgeous views of the water, the caliber of the resort experience was well below par. The rooms are very dated and food was not very good. My boyfriend and I were both very sick after dinner the first night and continued feeling sick throughout out our entire three nights at the resort. We ended up staying at the Allegro since it was part of a JetSet itinerary from a Groupon we purchased. Our first three nights of the trip we stayed in La Fortuna where we were not sick at all so our sickness was definitely something unique to the Allegro. The staff of the hotel were also not assertive in addressing problems or complaints. We booked a catamaran trip through the concierge in the lobby which included transportation to and from. The trip itself was wonderful except that no one came to pick us up once the trip was done and we were over an hour and a half from the allegro. The van back to the hotel was supposed to pick us up at 6pm and at 6:25 there was still no van. Luckily, we recognized two girls from the hotel who drove themselves and they offered to bring us home. When we addressed this with the hotel, they just told us the driver was in the area driving around and refused to give us any type of refund. The hotel also charges you 25 dollars per person for Internet (you basically purchase a login name and password) and there is only coverage in the lobby or by the pool. No internet in the rooms! The front desk failed to tell us that wireless is actually free (does not require a password) in the lobby and only requires a password by the pool. So, we payed for Internet for no reason. As for the rooms themselves, they were clean but very dated. The views, however, were very nice. The pool was recently renovated and also very nice. There are also white faced monkeys that roam the beach and will actually take food from your hands. They were pretty fun. The hotel is also located near nothing if you want to leave and do something away from the resort - you are really isolated. The closest tourist area (anywhere with restaurants or shops) is 45 minutes away in CoCo Beach. Coco Beach was really fun and had great food. I would actually recommend staying there and it is definitely worth the drive! All and all, I would never go back to the Allegro in Papagayo. I really feel the place was sub par from the rooms, to the food, and to the service.

Not a 3 star resort thats for sure...

Our room was very adequate and had a great view of the pool and the bay. The best thing about this resort is the friendliness of the staff. The waiters in the main dining area are very friendly and helpful, but understaffed. The 2 specialty restaurants were closed 2 of the 3 nights we were there and on the third night the Tex-Mex restaurant opened but the main dining room closed - and I don't really like Tex-Mex food, but had no choice. Didn't always get that warm fuzzy feeling that facilities were clean, and they were definitely showing age (see photo of table and napkin). The entertainment staff do an energetic show at night, but during the days they are best at playing Hide and Seek - they hide and guests try to find them. In fairness, one of them told me that they work 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., so I can understand being tired. Activities could be better managed, i.e., if they're trying to gather people to play pool volleyball when it's scheduled at 10 a.m., they would probably be more successful if they would make an announcement over the loudspeaker and then go to where the pool volleyball net is. Instead, they stand on the far side of the pool near the stage and wait for guests to come there, but since guests don't know to do that, no one or only a few show up and then the staff cancel the activity because there's not enough interest. Very frustrating! The facilities are pretty run down and not well maintained. The pool water was cloudy the entire time we were there and had lots of crud floating on the surface. Staff manually skimmed the water once or twice a day, but it did not seem like the pool filtration system was working. It was too bad because the pool would have been very inviting. There was a gigantic pair of men's Calvin Klein briefs on a pool lounger the entire time we were there (see photo), even though I did see staff straightening up and collecting cups and plates each evening. It was gross! Our first sight of their ping pong table on the beach was a surprise (see photo), but then we found out they have another one that they can set up in the amphitheater. You should bring your own balls though, because both of the ones they put out to play with were dented and one was cracked (see photo). That did make for an interesting game.
