This place has lots to offer, we had a large room it was clean, a little dated but it was a great location. There were monkeys there everyday which you could feed and visit. The food was simple and lacked variety for an all inclusive. However the bar tenders were great and The staff at the main desk were awesome. Anytime I needed anything they always went an extra 100% to make sure we were happy. The wifi was great but you had to be on at the office to get any or by the pool. The view is spectacular, The hotel is a ways out from everything, we found this a challenge as it was never cheap to go on excursions or into town. Although there were many water related activities, during which we caught some red snappers, tuna and enjoyed watching the dolphins. More>

This was the first time my wife and I had stayed in Central America, although we travel extensively. We stayed at two resorts during our stay, the Occidental Grand Papapagayo and this one the Allegro. What a difference. The Grand Papagayo was excellent. However I can honestly say that the Allegro was probably one of the worst resorts I have ever stayed in worldwide. Good points: Nice pool, Nice views, Lots of wildlife and friendly staff. Bad points: Well where do I start. Tired decor, Awful food and the so call Al la carte restaurants were usually closed. The food was done in a buffet style which usually appeared to be the previous days recycled leftovers , Constant loud drum and bass music around the bar and pool area making it almost impossible to hold a conversation. Hard uncomfortable beds and tatty bed linen and towels. Room mini bar fridge was never re-stocked and at weekends the place became party central for the locals which meant you often had to queue for 20 minutes just to get a beer and there was little space poolside. To get a taxi to the closest town with any nightlife, ATMs and restaurants etc cost $80 More>

The staff here was mostly very nice. The food was really bad, the worst I have ever had at an all inclusive. First of all, they are using the name Occidental Papagayo and there is another resort by that name. We reviewed that location and we went there first. It is very very confusing. There was a world of difference between them. I am surprised Occidental put their name on this awful place. A shuttle took us to the room. The grounds are really really steep and difficult to navigate on foot. The room looked nice but the TV was only 13 inches. There was a coffee maker and I asked for coffee everyday and never got any. If you ask they say yes but never bring it. So, for a cup of coffee you have to catch the shuttle or walk a steep hill. We thought there was ice nearby but the ice machine did not work either and there was no room service. We had to catch the shuttle or walk down the steep hill for ice. The food was horrible. One night I was served a chicken butt. The next day, a chicken back. The meat was a mystery. Stay out of the snack bar. It is gross. The bar drinks were the worst I have ever tasted. we switched to beer. It was the safest choice They had two wines, red and white both bad and both very dry. We ate at the Italian eatery. We were greeted with an attractive champagne glass. We thought it was champagne but it was pineapple juice with green coloring. My pizza was soggy at the bottom. There is as lot of trickery going on here.My sister was served egg noodles for fettuchini. If you have any physical limitations, this is not the resort for you. It is very difficult to get around. There is no adult entertainment. The kids activities take place in the only open bar. I thoought it was wierd since they had another large space available. It is a nice place for kids. There is a nice beach. The views are great. I felt they were really deceptive about the whole thing. You will not like this if you want a quiet adult experience. The staff was really good except for a man who kept lying to me about the coffee. They had no wash cloths or room cosmetics and the wifi barely works in the office area. t More>

Worst All-Inclusive ever

I have traveled to many All-Inclusives in both Mexico and the Caribbean and I can honestly say this was the worst, The food was horrible, was the same every day, and once food ran out it was not replenished so you had to get there early or eat whatever was left. The restaurants were not open every night, on our first night only the Mexican was open not even the buffet. I could have went to Taco Bell and got better food. Second night, only Italian was open and it just served a buffet, no ala-carte menu as advertised. Third night, only buffet and no sit down restaurants. The last 2 night all 3 were open but the hotel books many weekend stays for locals and couldn't get any reservations for the ala-carte restaurants. The soda fountain was always out of syrup and they brought in bottles of soda that you poured yourself and they were mostly flat. Considering that we paid for an all inclusive I felt I was cheated. The spa was not open at all for the entire stay, one of the special things my wife was looking forward to. There were no shows during the entire stay so after dinner there was basically nothing to do unless you wanted to sit in the bar and hear blasting Spanish music. There was only a limited bar menu and no premium alcohol unless you paid extra and only 1 brand of beer, the local Costa Rican brand. The rooms were okay but had a worn look to them even though they were supposedly just renovated. Also heard from the workers that the resort was closing in 2 weeks, I'm assuming for more renovations (or maybe for good?). There were almost no activities available during the day except a water aerobics class and water volleyball. Also, there was supposed to be a minibar in the room but all there was was a refrigerator with nothing in it. All in all it was one of the most trip experiences of my life. However if you go to The Blue River Resort reviews and read my other review you will see an entirely different story of the first part of my stay in Costa Rica. More>

The worst hotel experience

I travel often, I understand that some hotels are not the best, but this is by far the worst hotel experience I have ever had. The room was filthy, the floor was dirty, the shower had stains on the tiles, the toilet was dirty, the towels are yellowed they are so old, the pool towels are ripped and old. The shower curtain was too short to reach the ground so the water floods the bathroom floor. The curtains to the balcony were filthy with dirt and stains. They never have us enough towels and we never got wash cloths. The wifi does not work, at all even in the lobby. The food was horrible. The steam trays didnt keep anything hot, and once food ran out it was not replenished. The selection was very bad, and what was there was under cooked or sub par. The restaurants were not open every night, and considering I paid for an all inclusive the fact that they didnt open the snack bar and all the dining options advertised werent available was frustrating. The first half of my trip they didnt even offer water as a drink. I was so disgusted with the quality of the hotel i took pictures of everything I found to be unacceptable. More>
