Amsterdam Vacations

By foot, by bike, or by boat, the colorful, cosmopolitan UNESCO World Heritage city of Amsterdam is a charmer. Home to one of the highest museum densities in the world, art, history, and pop culture are all within minutes of one another. The Van Gogh Museum, National Museum, Anne Frank Museum, and the Royal Palace all nod to its past, while Madame Tussauds and NEMO, the largest science center in the Netherlands, look to the present and future. However, displays of tradition aren't only delegated to the past - don't forget the diamonds and Delft, whose masters are still at work, and works are still on display at their local factories. Yet among the icons, none stand out as brightly as the kaleidoscope of tulips that bloom in the 400-year-old De Hortus Botanical Gardens. From these landmarks and the shopping and cafes of the 9 Straatjes to the risque Red Light District and the gorgeous bridges that link and light the narrow streets at night, reasons to linger are more plentiful than the windmills and canals for which Amsterdam is so beloved.
